hi all,

I?m in the middle of getting an ultra, either 6400 or e4xt

I?ve been offered an e6400 naked, ie no option boards installed... I?d like to add ADAT I/O, maybe even an FX board. Is the ASCII option a good one ?

Are these still available anywhere ? Or just here and there on ebay ?

Would you recommend an RFX or invest the same money in some used outboard, like DP4 etc ?

The one thing I will comment on is the ASCII option. This is paramount. You need this. It lets you work much faster once you memorize all the hot keys and such. Also.. your emu will probably suffer from the double hits on the keys on the face of it. All of ours do it. Some worse then others. Getting the ASCII option allows you to put a 101 key keyboard, like the one I am typing on now. You don't have to deal with the button thing and you can actually go faster then the emu can keep up. Also, naming samples and presets and banks are much quicker too.

Only problem is that sometimes my E5000 Ultra dumps the keyboard. So I either have to restart the emu or just use the front panel keys. No biggy though. A small irratation, but with a much better return.

Since the e6400 in question is really naked, is there still a reasonable way to get that card ?

Is there any list available with the part numbers ? This would make search a whole lot easier... most shops don?t have any emu stuff except sampling CDs and soundcards, so I don?t really know what I?m looking for :)

I would say buy your sampler with everything you want and need, probably work out cheaper too. Memory is not to hard to find though.

The rfx doesnt work with Eos 4.7, if at all, so I cant be asked with it.

Yeah, don't expect them to have the sought-after stuff, though... they will have things like power supplies, LCDs, backlights, etc, but not much of the upgrades. I called them one time to see if they have the 128-voice poly kit , they said they'd "research" it, and they never called back. I ended up buying a whole another sampler (E4XT) just for those three chips.
