I have just taken delivery of my very first sampler, an E-Mu E-Synth classic. As a guitarist who?s just recently (about five weeks ago) started to get into keys, I?d appreciate the chance to pick some brains here. I?ve browsed the topics and picked up a fair bit of info, but much has gone over my head as I try and familiarise myself with sampling lingo so please be gentle with me.

First question, I?ve loaded some of the built in presets but they seem ?unfinished? i.e. no velocity switching etc. Is that normal? Do I have to edit them all first? I have no disks with my unit (floppies or CD-ROMs), is there anywhere I can get hold of some starter disks or the ones that Emu would have supplied originally?
When buying commercial sample CDs are they normally supplied 'ready to go' or does one need to edit and tweak before they could be used?

I?d also like to learn more about ROMs. Can I install any ROM into a classic or do the Classics and Ultras need different ones? If there is a difference how can I tell if it?s compatible prior to purchase?

From reading this forum I understand that my classic will only accept a SCSI drive, am I right thinking that I can use any drive up to 18Gb?

Hi there! I got my e-synth rack classic just a year ago, and I have probably been through most of you problems already, so just ask here and I'll try to answer. I got mine hooked up to the pc by a scsi card from adaptec, and it works without problems. You can have up to 18gb internal harddrive. I'm not quite getting what your problem with the presets are. What is your first preset? It is supposed to be called "eosmosis", and is a dark evolvin pad.

Seems like you've highlighted my first problem for me, I dont have eosmosis at all. I've tried the search facility and nothing. What I have as a first preset is "P001 Grand Piano 1" through to "P186 P5 no-Tone". These presets are not velocity sensitive and dont seem to have been dressed with effects at all. In fact they all sound very bland which is what made me think that they needed editing.

Thing is, they are not presets. They are merly the samples mapped togheter as multisamples. I'm feeling generous today, so send me a pm with your e-mail adress and I'll mail you the e-synth preset banks. Then you can just copy that file over to a floppy, and save them to your flash. That way you will always have a lot of useful presets ready to go just seconds after you turn your sampler on. No need to load presets of the harddrive.

As a total newbie to the world of synths & samplers I wasnt sure if I was doing it wrong, the unit was faulty or there was simply something missing.
