as title says lol... I have been recording samples and quite surprised by the amount of noise--when recording sine waves from a synth it's quite loud and very audible. I also recorded from the a very pristine digital source and got the same... I used balanced cables (only 2m), but can they really be responsible for this?
cheers

They could be. But, I am going to let you into a little secret...
I run all my studio gear ungrounded. Every time I have something grounded, I get a huge amount of noise that runs over the signal. It's almost like the noise floor comes up by about 30 or 40 db. I think it's the house I live in... the wiring might be hold so when I ground stuff... it's actually not or some kind of loop ocurrs. I don't know. But running things ungrounded seemed to get rid of the issue...
The only issue is, if I touch my patchbay I tend to get a small shock from time to time so it's probably not the safest way to run my kit in respect to me but what can I say for prestine sound. I get zapped if I drink from a soda can that's sweating and then patch something. Nasty.
So, you could try different connections. Maybe get some TSR's that are actually grounded or something if your running your kit grounded.
I am sure some other people will have other suggestions.

thanks m8, I'll check that stuff out... I don't think I've ever grounded anything

thing is it's a staticy type noise, not the hum associated with not grounding, and it's second hand so I'm not confident. will just have to see how it goes!

Maybe something is gained up too loud? I hope you get it sorted...

Check your sample Ram memory. You have onle one way to check it. Put it in another sampler.
