SCSI TO USB ADAPTER FOR INTERFACING WITH LAPTOP

I am currently looking into the possible alternatives to connect my Emu 6400 Ultra to my lap top thru scsi for sample editting. I just found and actual scsi to usb adapter cable online ( http://www.usb-ware.com/usb-scsi-adapter-u2scx.htm ). I was wondering if anyone had any idea if this could work to interface the two just as if i had a scsi card on a regular desktop for sending samples. And furthermore, if I got an external scsi hard drive would i be able to just daisychain out of that with this cable into my laptop and kill two birds with one stone sort of speak (hard drive + interface with lap top). Please let me know if this is posible and if any one has tryed it cause if it works i dont see why every one shouldn't do it this way ;)

I've gotten the impression that usb-scsi is not possible to use with the emus, but I might be wrong.

I had the very same idea a couple of months ago. I found a USB to SCSI lead on ebay but it had the wrong pin config for my Zip drive.
Cheap though, around 12 pounds and 11 of those were for shipping from Hong Kong.

I tried with the Adaptec usb2xchange adapter and it didn't work. The one you're looking at is a different make and model though so it may work.

There are 2 main problems with the Adaptec one, firstly windows only detects the Emu once instead of the 8 times as required and also it shows up as a usb device and not scsi. This means that Wavelab/Soundforge etc cannot see the adapter or your sampler.

You can daisychain a scsi connection with the drive in the middle but it is not advisable or recommended by Emu if it is formatted using the FAT format.

It is unacceptable, not recommended, and DANGEROUS to share by simultaneous connection on the SCSI bus) a writable removable media or fixed device. YOU MAY LOSE DATA!

We realize that these rules are contrary to the previous system of connecting the E4 and computer to the same SCSI bus. We hope the advantages of using the FAT 32 file system will outweigh the disadvantages for you. If not, you can continue to use the E4 file system and connect both devices via SCSI.

FAT formatted drives CANNOT share the SCSI bus with EOS and a PC. The PC?s operating system does not understand the concept of two master SCSI devices and may overwrite and damage your EOS sample files.

Check the EOS FAT manual for more details.

Let us know how it works out for you if decide to give it a shot.

WORD UP THANKS A BUNCH FOR ALL YOUR REPLYS FELLAS. I ACTUALLY KEPT DIGGING INTO THE FORUM HERE AND EVENTUALY FOUND SEVERAL THREADS ABOUT THIS SAME WISHFULL THINKING AND EVERY TIME IT SEEMS NO ONE GOT IT GOING ;(. I WAS AFRAID IT WAS TOO EASY TO BE TRUE. I THINK I'M JUST GONNA INSTALL THE INTERNAL HD AND JUST USE THE SCSI WITH AN OLD COMPUTER I GOT LAYING AROUND FOR MY EDITTING. :thumbs:

There is one other option, but it depends on whether or not your laptop accepts PCMCIA cards. There are people (somewhere, out there) who make PCMCIA card SCSI adapters, specifically for laptop users.

Unfortunately, I don't know who any of those manufacturers are, or where you might find one of those cards. But a quick Google of PCMCIA and SCSI threw back a truckload of links...

Hi All,

I'm new to the forum and I came looking for exactly this information so this thread is very timely and has answered part of my question.

My other question is this;

Has anyone managed to use a FW or USB to SCSI adapter to connect an emu to an external hard drive or CD drive directly so that it appears as and external drive attached to the emu?

hhhm, this might be the one. cause in most cases i found the problem was that since it was USB or FW that the emu was not recognising it. but i'm thinking it comes dirrectly from PCMCIA that it would be a legit SCSI connection. I'm gonna dig into that goggle list and see if A. its less that $100 and B. if any one has tryed it with samplers. thanks for the head up Vermis_rex ;)

This should work under Windows using SCSI emulation mode: http://www.ratocsystems.com/english/pro ... u2scx.html

If you're looking for a PCMCIA option then i can recommend the Adaptec 1480B, I use it my self and can confirm that it works great.

Tbh I think all of the 1480 models should work fine.

Automatically detected and mounted as an USB1.1 Full Speed device with USB1.1-enabled port.

I'm still dubious and don't see how this would be any different to the Adaptec usb2xchange which also shows up as a usb device, which is no good considering Wavelab and Soundforge are looking for a scsi devices and do not recognise them. The only difference I can see is the mass storage and scsi emulation modes, which could make a difference.

I'm not sure what the difference is between this one and the one i originally found. Are you currently using this with your emu with no problems?

ratoc looks like it could actually work, judging from this screenshot from the user's manual:

it's pretty expensive though. i did a quick google search and came up with prices around 130 eur.

Akai S2000 & S3000 series are not supported under XP so I would suspect it is the same for Emu.

easy way to connect esi with ibook with usb2scsi-cable

if you are looking for a easy way to connect your emu-sampler with your mac (i tested it on a 12" ibook), you need:

-> usb-to-scsi-cable (i got a castlewood systems cable, maybe it will work with other cables like this, but i never tested it: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000HUA2WO/ref=nosim/?tag=nextag-ce-20&creative=380333&creativeASIN=B000HUA2WO&linkCode=asn

-> HP-DSub-50-Pin-Adaptor (to plug the usb-to-scsi-cable to your sampler)

-> bias peak

connect the cable to your mac, open bias peak, go to the menu "sampler" and choose "emu". that's it. no drivers, no hustle.

just load your sample and have fun.
