hi folks, Emu noob here.

I got started on the wrong foot with 'Emu', when i bought the emulatorX package

So i want to get a REAL emu sampler now, but i'm completely lost in the whole line, there are tons of models, with ultra, turbo variations etc...

Could someone maybe breakdown the basics for me, or point me to a good emu ressources website (the emulator archive website only covers the line up to the ESI series) ; to be honest i'm not even sure what the main differences between the esi series and the newer ones are.

Any pointers appreciated

edit : i was absolutely underwhelmed by the z-plane implementation in the emulatorX, has anyone been able to check those against a hardware implementation ?

There's an Emu e4XT Ultra on sale via Ebay (US seller) starting bid at $450. This is one of the last models that Emu manufactured. It's a great unit. As for which is best for you, that all depends on what you want to do with it....

What will you be using it for? How many midi channels, audio outputs, voices of polyphony etc do you need?

I would go for an E4XT Ultra, preferably with an output expansion as these are hard to find seperately. Your answers to the above questions will dictate which model you may prefer.

I have an E4XT Ultra, E6400 Ultra and Emulator X2. The filters are not exactly the same but are very similar on both hardware and software, some of them sound better on the hardware and some better on software imo. For me its more about the quality of the envelopes, lfos and cord section and the way you can manipulate the filters.

You can buy an emu from the USA if you wish as they are able to change between both 110 and 240 v

I'm really eyeing the ultra series right now, at the going rates, the e4xt is affordable and the e6400 is really a bargain.

I was wondering about something though, because i want to do a lot of drums sampling, layering etc...
Do you guys think that EOS gets in the way for that purpose ?
Some people on other boards seem to think that its deepness and all the possibilities are overkill when trying to get a drumkit going quickly for instance... ?
Would an older model be more suited for drums, maybe an ESI, or even an emax ?

well.. i am using the emu for drums my self.. if you are after realistic drums, go for software.. but for anything else its just kick ass..

Be sure to get an emu with either a zip drive or cd-rom, so you can move your samples from your pc.


I love it.. its not as quick as using battery, but for me the result are much more pleasing.. and with the cords, you can realy play out the drums.

that's what i wanted to hear actually
