IDE --> CF / SCSI --> CF Behaviour

PostPosted: Thu Mar 26, 2009 7:10 pm

I've been using a HD on the IDE port and and CF card via SCSI-->IDE
ADAPTER --> CF for a longer time in my XT Ultra without any problems.

Since I am planning to minimize energy consumption (and otherwise
promote the possibility to put the EMU into a smaller, handy case),
I want to only use the CF card on the IDE port and get rid of the HD.

Unfortunately, if I connect the CF card directly to the IDE port, it isn't
recognized at all. I've also tried different IDE-->CF adapters, but none
of them are working.

Did any of you obtained similar results?

At first, I was just thinking about bad contact of the power supply cable,
so I switched several times between my old SCSI+IDE configuration,
but nothing changed.

IDE CF drive must be boot mode only, not hot swappable on the IDE channel

Further info:

The IDE channel in the Ultra only supported a master drive, and does not expect removable media since I dont believe it supports AT-API support for volume disconnect.

If you use SCSI which is a richer protocol and which supports removable drives on the Emu it works.

THe only way to get an IDE CF reader to work is to set it to master, boot mode only i.e. the CF emulates an IDE drive - problem then is if you remove it whilst powered on and insert another CD, the Emu will likely have trashed the drive contents since it thinks the old drive is still there (FAT Tables etc).

So, CD on IDE is a bit useless.

Thanks, kalide.
Hot-swap isn't important to me. But, I didn't understand, how to set
the CF reader to boot mode only. I'll check the manual for this.
But if I remember correctly, there is only a jumper for Master/Slave
configuration.

Some info on the topic here:

(not emu specific however)

http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/rev ... microdrive

and here

http://www.togeo.com/togeo/wordpress/?p=73

its "True IDE mode", "Boot mode" etc.

hey, what exactly do you use scsi->ide? Which company? Acard?
If you can write the exact model.

I am looking for a SCSI->IDE for CF cards and do not want to buy wrong.
Now I use only the IDE drive, and the CF card will support the transfer of samples.

I am using this scsi-->ide adapter: ACARD 7720U SCSI-IDE

It was running out of the box, no complaints so far.

Hey, I bought the AEC-7720U.

I don't have the card IDE -> CF yet and try to connect IDE CD-ROM, but unfortunately it doesn't work.
How do I connect only the power supply it works and the CD-ROM EJECT.
When I connect AEC-7720 AND power supply from PC/AT AC - CD-ROM's LED still lighting and nothing works. (EJECT is not responsible)

Here are my problems:

-CF/CD-ROM is set as master. It's ok?

-Terminator active jumper (JP2), Terminator Power (JP4)? How does it set? What about JP3? (Active LED)

-power connect directly to the CF / CD-ROM? (from PC AC)

-or you connect the power supply to CN3 power connector?

Please, Write me, how do you set AEC-7720U to work with CF (and how CF model type you use)

thanks for your help in advance
Adam

Ok it's work! :) :)

SONY CD-ROM works perfectly :) Tomorrow gives me IDE -> CF. :)

I had to connect the power to separate (small plug) AEC-7720U and typical for CD-ROM; remains a terminator's problem.

My line is : D1 AEC-7720U/CF or CD-ROM, D2 Plextor CD-ROM SCSI and last D6 Emu 5000 Ultra (with SCSI terminator: ON) other equipment: D8 Fat IDE, D9 Floppy.

In the SCSI system the first and last devices must be terminated.
BUT I removed jumpers, cos' with JP2 (terminator on) EMU not working.
As you can see, in EMU Ultra, we don't have the first device terminated.
But what about J4? I removed too. It Jumper J4 is required with CF? CD-ROM it's only CD-ROM :) not writable device.

Adam

I left everything at default settings:

Board Type: 7720U Revision 3.1
Jumper 1: SCSI ID 6 (closed,closed, open)
Jumper 2: Termination enabled (closed)
Jumper 3: Active LED (open)
Jumper 4: Terminator power enabled (closed)

IDE-->CF-Adapter set to MASTER

Hmm, I have rev 3,1. too. My default settings: Jumper 1: I set SCSI ID 1 (open, open, closed) but there is no jumper JP2 (open - without jumper), no jumper 4 (open) and no jumper JP3 LED (open - it's ok). Hmmm, the card is new and was only jumpers for the SCSI ID. No more.

Certainly it doesn't work with my jumper 2, cos' it's my first device. Whether it is your last device? (ID 6)

Maybe jumper 2 and 4 are useful only when device is last...

I don't know about the TERMINATION POWER, but usually, the first and the last device in the SCSI chain have to be terminated.
In my case - it's the case.
