I make hip-hop beats and currently use an mpc2000xl. I am going to switch to an emu e4 sampler but have a few questions. First, what kind of controller do I need to get and what cables will I need to hook it up to the sampler. Second what is the best way to hook up a cd player to sample from (ie what cables to use, is there a certain kind of cd player that works best?) Thanks in advance for any advice.

The MPC will control the E4 with ease. You will use a standard MIDI cable that you can pick up from radio shack for about 10$



To run a CD player into an E4 you will use the same type of cable that you use for the MPC. The 1/4 inch (if you are using imperial measurements) cables that you use with most of your studio gear. A CD player may have RCA outputs or even a 1/8th inch connectors.



I would think that generally most CD players are going to be the same except for the amount of noise ( the hissing sound) on the output. I would think that a very expensive CD player would produce less noise than a conventional CD player. I just use a mini carry around type of CD player for my sampling.

Thank you that was very helpful. The thing is that I am thinking about selling my mpc. Would any midi controller work then. And what about the sequencing on an mpc. can you do that with other controllers or do you have to get a sequencer too?

Most midi controllers do not have sequencers the way that the mpc does. You can use computer software such as cubase or fruityloops for sequencing, or you can use hardware sequencers such as the mpc.
