Hello, ive just bought an e5000 mainly to run samples through its z-plane filters. Ill be playing loops from my computer. Is it possible to manually tweak the filters while the loop plays THROUGH the emu?

Or so i need to load all sounds into the actual unit?

thanks..sorry for the noob questions, there will be more

Yes it is possible. You can do it by hardware midi control or software midi control (your host have it) and further modulation options, this is common thing. What host you are using?

logic 9, ive already downloaded a logic environment for it, will be having a first go at using it this weekend :)

are there any quick tips or faqs around that could help me quickly get to grips with the filters and seting up mods? ie lfo to cutoff etc?

cheers

Too bad, i am on PC so i can't help you directly since i don0t have logic but it should be mandatory.

Here you will find everything you need ;
http://www.emu.com/support/files/downlo ... Platform=2
but firstly you should check EOS classic Manual and Sound Authoring Guide. Also try to visit this place http://www.tweakheadz.com/resources.html

But my best advice is to turn machine and try to dig it. When you fall in problem then go and read manual, then move on. LFO to Cutoff is very mandatory and easy to do once when you get into modulation window (which is called cords in emu). E-MU samplers are wonderful machines, just don't quit to early. I have e6400 ultra and also i have Software (VST) revision called Emulator X. Software version does have some strong points (you can also read manual/tips for software sampler revision, it will translate 90% to your hardware version) in library editing, overall accessibility etc. but it can not match the sound of hardware. Enjoy your purchase :grin:

To be able to process external sound source through the filters of the E5000, I believe you will have to expand your unit by adding the RFX-32 effect board. This provides the routing possibilities you will need, and the function you are asking for is what E-mu used to call Live-sample when promoting the RFX card back in 2002. I don't think the function of running external sound through the filters or standard effects of any of the ULTRA series of samplers is available as part of the standard hardware or OS.

Your alternative is now to run the samples from your E-mu sampler and apply filtering that way.

perhaps a proteus is the tool i should be using for filtering sound...has any one recommendations?

Best if you use EOS 4.7. Then you can do real time resonance control also (Q).

1. Record your sound
2. Sample it or transfer it to the sampler
3. Set up a bank which contains your sound as a preset (aka patch) and set the filters to respond to MIDI controllers
4. Refer to EOS 4.0 Manual

Page 24 has a picture which explains the above

5. Set Cords to manipulate the filters - map MIDI controllers to the cords.
6. Voila - real time filter control whilst playing your recorded sound.

Page 269 of the EOS manual explains the various morphing filters. Start with an obvious one like band pass.

Note if you do want real time processing of sound, then you probably want a different defice or tracking down the RFX. the RFX is a complex beast - and hard to find second hand - possibly expensive. Other devices which allow external input filtering:

* Korg MS2000 (R)
* Various External FX processing units
* Sherman Filter Banks
* Old school MAM resonators

M

Without the RFX, you can't use the Emu as an FX send/return loop - so you cannot use it "live" - its a sampler - so sample first, then apply FX/Filter as a patch.

If you have any type of MIDI control surface / synth with a control surface, you should be able to tweak (and record those tweaks) in real time by assigning the EMU’s MIDI controllers to different pots / buttons / sliders on whatever control surface you have.

I have a Roland JP8080 that I use in this way.

Or for basics you could map the filter resonance and cut-off to the pitch bend and modulation wheels of your controller keyboard (if you don't mind loosing modulation and pitch bend facilities through your controller keyboard). See Kalide’s response above re’ the Cords page in the manual.
