Hi. I just recently got my hands on an E4 Platinum, and it's my first E-MU sampler, so I'm a TOTAL noob. I'm trying to get some stuff set up and wrap my head around what's going on here. I really want to use this as part of a live performance rig, so setting up multi mode with various inputs and external routing is very important to me. I've been reading as much as I can on this forum, but I've reached a point where I can't figure out what I want to do based on threads here or the manuals.

So, my first problem is that I'm not able to get any sound whatsoever through the External ADC 1 or 2 inputs. I tried binding them to the main output, choosing them as inputs in the multi-mode screen, and making voices with them as the input source. None of those worked for External ADC 1 or 2, but all worked for the sampling ADC. Can anyone let me know what I'm doing wrong? Is it possible that the card isn't installed right? If that's the case would it still show External ADC 1 and 2 as inputs in the menu?

OK, second problem is harder to explain. I set up a multi mode, and I put a preset on a MIDI channel, and then set its output to "mixer," and then in the mixer page set the main output to a bus (let's say "bus 1") at level 127, and then set bus 1 to 100% in the main output and 0% in GFX1 and GFX 2. So, theoretically, the preset should play through the Bus1 FX and then to the main output, right? Well, it does that when I am in the RFX setup manage or edit screens, but not otherwise. Does anyone know why that might be?

Ultimately, what I'm trying to do is have 10 presets go to 10 different busses (for insert FX) and then be mixed to the Main. Also, on the 2 other busses, the input from an external synth, and the return from an external FX unit. And for each of the 10 presets and the external synth and the FX return to have sends for GFX 1 (delay), GFX 2 (reverb), and the external effect unit. Based on my understanding of the manual, I feel like I know how this should be set up, but I can't make it work on the sampler itself.

It might be worth checking the cable on the analogue input card. There's no reason I can think of why you would get sound through the sampling ADC and not through the input card, if you're routing them in the same way. Reboot the sampler and watch the screen; it should say that the input card is installed.

Regarding the second issue, have you assigned the RFX Setup to your Multisetup? Try creating and naming an RFX Setup, store it in Flash Ram, then go to the following screen:

MultiSetup Manage > Edit

From there you should be able to link a specific RFX Setup to your Multisetup.

I think also it´s a Routing / Cable Problem.
The Routing can be very complex in the E-MU. So , as Ommatidium already said , check all possibilities in the routings Menus and in the Mixer And in the RFXCard "Setup" again and shure..... your Hardware - Cable s and Monitoring . ( Inputs / Outputs )

Yes, that did the trick, thank you!! I figured it was some missing bit of information that was tripping me up.

Yes, it says "Input Option Card Installed" on boot-up. One thing that might be relevant is that the External ADC 1 and 2 options are not available in the New Sample window. Sampling ADC, AES, ADAT and Resampling only. Either way, I guess I should get in there and check the cable. Gah, frustrating!

I cracked her open and disconnected and reconnected the cable to the External ADC card, and it made no change. Sampler still says, "External Input Option Card Installed" on bootup, but I still can't hear it and I still can't see the External ADC 1 or 2 options when sampling.

I spent the rest of the day just making presets, though, which was really satisfying. It's so fast/easy to get good loop points and make good sounds in this box. I started out just using the sampler's front panel with an ASCII keyboard, and then I tried ZoeOs, but I'm not sure ZoeOs makes it any faster. It would be nice if I could use ZoeOs to do batch processes on samples (e.g., take 10 samples, copy all of them to 10 new slots and then reverse the 10 new ones and then layer them in a preset with the original 10 and then set up a cord to switch between normal and reverse), but I don't think ZoeOs can do that.

Anyway, stoked, but could really use some help figuring out the External ADC issues. Maybe my card is buggered?

As here already said. There are several possibilities to connect or setup all this Inputs and Outputs in the EOS within the RFX Card.
Revered the Manual again.

For example:
In the Sample Menu "New" , you are talking about - are no ADC 1-2 Input available - this is in the Nature of the EOS Thinking,
They are ( if so selected ) named as " Analog " 44,1 or 22.05.

If you try to connect via a "Preset" in the Preset Edit menu Area - you need the "Note On" CC to hear and handle you devise...

....and so on and so on

Please Refered the Manual again.

There are also some additional hidden difficult-to-find menus wich refered to the "Input" . For example the Trigger dB Page for Theshold Level for each of your Inputs.

Ok, but how would I choose an analog input from the External ADC vs. the Sampling ADC? When I choose Analog 44.1 or 22.05 it routes the sound in from the Sampling ADC. I couldn't find mention of this in the RFX manual.

I think I tried that, but maybe I had the MIDI channels wrong or something. I'll dig deeper in to make sure the lack of note-on isn't what I was missing.

ok, added at the beginning it's really difficult at this point.

Try the "Resample" as Input in the Sample-Menu and routing your Stuff you want to sample in the way your choice to "Main -out" .
Also named at Sub 1-2 wich similar to ADAT 1-2 AES S/pidf etc etc .

Two Tips and hidden Facts.
The Voice Routing is "as it is" a Voice routing Input . So if so, : your E4XT ( normaly 128 voice ) has only after that 126 Voices for Rest !
Remember : you can handle up to 16 Inputs!!!.
So if you run this ....you lost 16 Voice and you have a 112 Voice Maschine.

2. ...buuuutttt!
One Preset can handle up to 32 Voices !
So you can made a Preset with 16 availeby Live Inputs! layered via one/in Preset.
....wich can be "Crossover" - in Realtime -with XfdRnd in the Preset Chord Menu !

There is no other Maschine wich can do like this.....and this since 199x. Amazing!
Example:
8 Stereo Mixes -Soundscape- ( what ever you want ) scrolling via one Modwheel

Ok, though, I get it. I'm still working on this.

This is getting super frustrating. I followed the instructions on page 46 of the RFX Manual exactly and was able to bind the Sampling ADC to the Main output with no trouble, but the same process didn't work for the External ADCs. If anyone else can confirm doing this successfully with their own E4 and the external input card, I'd love to hear about it, just to know it's supposed to work.

If the sampler can see the card, then it's possible you've had some sort of component failure on the card itself. I can't think of any other explanation, because you clearly know your way around the OS.

It's small consolation, but I have the analogue input and the R-ADAT card and they've always worked as described in the manual.

Of course, Sod's law dictates that the next time I boot up my Ultra, both cards will be dead.

Thanks Ommatidium. It's at least comforting to know that I'm not just making some silly mistake in settings. I'll bust out the card and examine it for obvious blown components and see what else I can see.

Well, due to no action on my part, Channel 2 on my input card seems to be working all of a sudden. I only noticed it because I happened to put a really nasty grungulator effect on a bus that had Ch2 bound to it, and it made noise, so I investigated and found that it worked. Channel 1 is still not working.

Between the sampling ADC and Ch2 on the input card, I've got enough inputs for all the outputs of my Nord G2 Engine, so I'm all set. Hooray!

Speak_onion, have you tried cleaning the inputs at all? If not, buy a can of this:



Spray it on a jack plug. Put the jack plug in Channel 1's inputs and twist it back and forth several times. Fire up sampler and test the input. If it doesn't work, try it again a couple more times just to be certain.

There's no guarantee that it will have any effect, but I've personally repaired "broken" or crackly inputs/outputs/sliders on synths and amplifiers doing nothing more than the above.
