i am going to start looking for 2 external scsi harddrives... i am sure this is going to be fun.

how big can i go, using 4.01 for now... and what manufactures have you guys had the best luck with...

i thought we had a post like this here but i couldn't find it if there is...

hmmm off the top of my head i think its 18 gig limit, im running a 9gig hp on 4.10

phono as harddrives are so cheap these days I was thinking of upgrading mine within my EX4T!

What make do you have??

My solution to this problem (tho im using 4.70) was to get an IDE-SCSI convertor case. Basically its an external case with a bridge controller. U connect an IDE drive to the controller in the case (i used a 60gig Seagate Barra4). This controller converts the IDE into a SCSI device. The rear external side of the case has 2 40pin Ultra-Wide SCSI connectors, a terminator and SCSI ID jumpers and a power switch. Once the drive is mounted inthe case and the SCSI ID/Termination is configured just connect the SCSI cable to the case the to the EMU.

Works perfectly for me , all devices just see the drive as a real SCSI drive thanks to the SCSI RISC controller chips on the board. Seems rather quiet....much quieter than the EMU....ah that reminds me..i gotta get around to replacing the power supply fan for a 'Papst' silent fan.

The reason i went this route was because SCSI disk drive size compared to price of IDE drive size is much cheeper and the IDE drives are much easier to get. Besides that i planned to format the disk as Fat32 so i could use the entire disk. To my surprise, i decided to format the disk as native EMU format under 4.70 and there was NO 18gig limitation....i got a partition the entire size of the fully formatted disk....56 gig ;-)

The case was an Acard ARS-2000WB SCSI-IDE Bridge Cabinet case. I payed 116 USD from memory. I can't see the case on the site now but they DO still make it...just email away.

i think i might go that route. i am sure the seagates are really expense as scsi's. i did find that they make them though. i wonder how eos 4.01 would hand that large a drive.

i ultimately would like to get two perhaps, one for back up and one for backing up the back up. but i would like to get the image burned on cd, but that would require programs and a scsi card that i can get. and get a burning program that works. i have to either down grade to windows 95, or upgrade up to 98 se for the cd burning program that came with my burner to work. seriously... i also really don't know where to get the upgrade, (haven't looked hard enough) or that chickentranslator (haven't looked hard for this either at the mo).

this really makes me happy, i will have to save up a little i am sure. the case i am sure is alittle bit expense...

Well... does anybody know the new size limit in EOS v4.7?
I recall having read somewhere, that the sizes supported should be much larger than 18GB? ... I'm about to invest in a new HD and it would be useful to know how "high" to go :O)

I mentioned above when i formatted my 60 gig Seagate External with EOS 4.7 to EMU format it produced a partition of 56 gig. So yeah it must be much greater than the old 18 gig limit ;-)

I successfully installed a 120gb seagate IDE drive, using EOS 4.7. The whole drive was formatted. Seagate is also the quietest brand of HD's

About putting a papst fan in. I've done it. It doens't help much. The EMU fan itself is not that noisy. The noise is made by the architecture of the sampler, eg. the "tunnel" the air is traveling through is the reason for the noise. Just try opening the sampler and holding it in midair, not much noise at all.
So my solution was to make a switch for it to turn it of when I want to. I've only got e5000 so the not all of the external outs are used. SO I used one of the holes for mounting the switch in. Just fitted and it looks nice.
I use it alot when I sample using a microphone.

About that fan thing; I've been contacting EMU a long time ago regarding this noise prob. It's darn irritating to listen to (as if the computer was not enough!). I asked if anything would happen if I simply disconnected the fan, and the response was that if the EMU was not sandwiched in a rack, and had plenty of air around it, it should PROBABLY be ok. He mentioned also though, that the RFX is making the EMU "sweat" also, so the risk is yours. If you try it out, do not blame me if it blows up! ;O)
I believe that if you have a beefier power supply than those in the early ultra's it would be a bit safer, since I assume the supply does not give as much heat of as the smaller supplies (?). It's a risky try, but I think I'll investigate the option when I recieve my beefier supply. Also I believe that a HD will further complicate this. Rule must be that the less options, the greater chance it will be ok. But then again; who can live without RFX and HD!?

My suggestion is to pull the HD out of the E4 and put it in a seperate SCSI/IDE box (and if possible put the box in the room next to you).

The next step could be to try and disconnect the power supply fan.

My friend have had his fan disconnected and the top chase off on his e64. That worked fine.

I don't understand all this fuss about the E--MU's fan! It's imperceptible next to traffic noise, SCSI drive and CPU fan noise in my apartment! Distractions abound...just means I have to mix down on a Sunday morning when it's quiet around here haha! Nads.

Just an idea, I went into a studio yesterday and someone was using a DVD-Ram drive with their emu. To be honest it's something that I had never considered before.
