E4XT not booting - blank LCD

I get some LEDs coming on but the screen lights up and nothing appears. If I hit/bump the screen some lines will appear, and when I keep doing it the lines will change. It won't even get to the point that the floppy will be accessed. When I first got it I noticed that the screen would go blank and the lines would appear. During this time I'd press buttons on the screen, and when the screen came back, I saw the E4XT performing the actions of the buttons that I'd pressed but in fast forward.

I also noticed that when browsing instruments there would be a glitch in the audio when first playing them. It would correct itself but would start doing it again soon after. Another thing I noticed is that a quick reverb sound would come out of the sampler when booting.

I've tried re-seating the 128mb of ram and those two little SIMMs at the front right of the sampler to no avail. Check all the cables and it still won't boot.

Sounds serious

1) Have you measured the current from the PSU?
2) Try to disconnect all the stuff, so you only have the motherboard and the display connected, no memory or anything else, just to see if you get power. Maybe something else is broken.

It may be the memory that holds the EOS which is not working as it should?

I hope that you can fix it

Hmm.. I'm wondering if the boot rom got corrupted or something. This sampler sat around for a while and was stored in an attic but not sure for how long. The very first time I turned it on it didn't boot, but did the 2nd time. Then from there it kept giving trouble and got worse, to the point that it's not working any longer.

I'm going to continue running diagnostics on it and see what happens. I don't want to have to spend $80 on a boot rom and that not be the problem.

PS: I see the boot rom, but what is that little chip right behind it? The smaller one? Not sure what that one is for.

Have you tried to reinstall EOS?

I'm not sure if you're asking if I tried to reinstall it and then it gave out, or if you're saying that I SHOULD try.

I didn't try installing it, it was giving me trouble the first day I got it. It gradually got worse and then POOF!

But I don't think there's a way to install the OS. The LEDs come on and the display too (no text), but the floppy drive LED isn't accessed in bootup, so it doesn't get that far. If it could access the floppy I'd upgrade the OS.

I'm wondering if it's just the boot rom that went bad. There's a place that has them for $80 but I'm not sure I want to do that because if it doesn't work, that's another $80 down the drain :???:

Try to put it all together.
Insert a dos floppy formaterad with the EOS on.
When your E4 starts press enter (yes). See what happens. It is always worth a try

good luck

Emulators perform a few internal tests while they are booting and turn off the LEDs when the test passes. These are from the Ultra, but are probably valid for previous models. Maybe you can get a clue.

Test Summary
Master LED off Processor is up and running
Prst Manage LED off DRAM works
Prst Edit LED off FPGA (U45) configured successfully
Disk LED off G20 initialization OK
Sample Manage LED off Simple FPGA access worked
Sample Edit LED off LCD successfully initialized
MIDI LED off Kchip written to successfully
All LEDs off All boot tests passed

I just tried. All of the LEDs come on for a split second, then some go off. I think the only one that doesn't light up with the others when initially turning it on is the Master LED. And here are the ones that are still lit when I get the blank screen:

Sample Edit
Midi
SCSI

If the lighting order you posted is correct and I'm reading this the right way, does that mean something is wrong with the LCD? Because remember, I was getting those weird lines in it as mentioned in posts above. But now it doesn't do that and it only gives me a blank screen.

is the chip marked EMU8000 right at the back [near scsi port] getting hot very quickly when you power up?
