Using Akai HD for storing akai presets to use with EOS

Hello everybody,
I have tons of Akai CDs and want to get rid of them by copying them to a hard disk. I don't want to load each volume in my sampler and save them: too painful !

1- I tried to use an old version of Translator to convert Akai volumes to EOS banks : if failed ("sample memory full") ; Guys from Translator were never able to tell me if their new version is now capable of such an operation ;
2- So i say to myself : "why not formating a Akai HD and then copy the cd-rom onto it and then link it with the e-mu via scsi ? " As we know, e6400 Ultra can read akai cd-rom.

But I think there might be two major problems : are the ULTRA samplers capable of reading Akai HD ? Will it be possible to format a 80 Go HD to the Akai format, regardless of the 512mb limitation ?

Thank you for your attention.

If you want to get rid of the CDs but keep the data then the easiest way would be to make a disc image of each cd (ISO)

The ISO images could then be stored on a HD, if you wanted to audition any stored images you could use CDXtract as this will read akai rom iso images.

Then if you wanted to load any files you could burn the ISO image to a cdrw and once you have imported the relevant banks onto your emu HD the cdrw can be overwritten.

This is the method I use to save having hundreds of Akai CDs kicking around.

One word of caution..... Make a further backup of the folder containing your disc images to an external removable HD to avoid any heartbreak in the event of a catastrophic HD failure. ;)

Okay,
I get it ! Thank you, Jahfunk !

It will be a long job but if it's the only way...

It would have been great if Chickensys' Translator was operational on that type of translation but I never had a firm answer from those guys ensuring me that it would work, if I ever buy Translator 6. And as the free version doesn't allow any translations, I can't make my own opinion...

Well, thanks again.

The fact that ISO images can be made at the speed your drive spins (x48) means that it should only take a few mins to make each image, so you could create 20-30 per hour and while one is cooking you could always make and name a folder to put it into. I also have tried to find images for the covers using image search and added the jpeg to the folder to make it easier to identify the cd by artwork.
CDXtract not only reads these ISOs but will audition the entire contents with One click of the mouse! :grin:
