LAYERING Question (Emu Ultra 4XT)

Hi folks,

i have an Emu Ultra E4XT and i had a question which it would be great if someone could help me please. i have had it a while and loaded lots of library sounds onto it and am just starting to try and makes some beginners edits. This is quite a basic question so i am sure someone will be able to answer this quite easily.

So, If i Load a Bank of sounds (say Strings 1-10), and then instead of being in WHOLE MODE i want to layer the sound. i hit the LAYER button and then i have a choice of Strings 1-10 as Layer Part A and Srtings 1-10 as Layer Part B. i can then layer any of the 10 x Strings sounds in whatever combination of pairs i wish. No problem !!

But what my problem/question is regards the SAVING of my chosen Layer patch. If i layer Strings 1 with Strings 3 then how do i SAVE this so that everytime i load this Bank (lets say the Strings 1 and Strings 3 Layer is the ONLY patch in this Bank) it calls it up ??

At the moment i have Strings 1-10 (Part A) and Strings 1-10 (Part B) and so no defined Layers have been saved.

Thanks a lot guys and i hope i have explained this ok.

Best,

Paul

Try to handle your Layer- Sounds via " Voices " in one Preset. Much better editing . ( Groups import/export Voices etc ) . Refered the Manual for more Details.

The features you need are COMBINE (page 320 Manual) and COPY(page 315 Manual)

COMBINE
Make sure the desired multisample is combined into the same group by hitting the preset edit button
Then hit F2 (Sample Zone) followed by F5 (Combine)
Now when you select the copy command the whole multisample range is copied to the destination preset

COPY (Adding the multisamples to the destination preset)
While in preset edit mode Select the preset you wish to copy
Highlight G1(Group 1)
Hit F1 (Utilities)
Hit F4 (Copy) and place source preset into destination preset
Change the group number of the newly added multisample set to group 2

By changing the group number you can now individually alter pan, volume, transpose chorus, slide filter etc of either multisample set.
Then just export the newly created preset and this will save only the needed samples from the samplers current memory, and it will ignore ones not used in the preset

This took me a while to learn, I hope it helps

Guys,

Thank you very much indeed for your help. i will try this out over the weekend. i spent a long time trying to fathom it out but could not seem to get anywhere with it. It seemed way more complex than on a regular non-sampling keyboard. i had not tried the COMBINE and COPY procedures before so this was obviously one of the main problems.

Best,

Paul

Hi Jah Funk,

So i not touch the LAYER button at all ?? i kind of assumed i would be using this because its just a basic Layer (of two sounds) which i am wanting to create ?? ie. Both samples layered right accross the entire keyboard with no Splits or anything.

In any case, i pressed PRESET EDIT, then pressed SAMPLE ZONE. It does not give me the option of COMBINE (F5). It only gives me NEW S.ZONE / GET MS / blank / blank / blank / EXPAND. F3/F4/F5 are blank ??

Cheers,

Paul

Re the layer option
I always combine, copy, layer my presets then and save my stacks as they load back in the same way as I exported them. There may be other ways but this method works well for me. I also often stack 3 or 4 copies of the same preset, assign them to different group numbers then apply different pan settings and add the following cord ...

Source - LFO2 -------- Destination - fine pitch --------- Amount - 7 ( or whatever)

Set LFO 2 Sync to free run and set different rates for each group (to ensure each group has a different LFO detune rate)
Maybe Xpose one of the groups up or down 12 semitones
Maybe set different chorus amounts on some groups
Offset the sample starts of each group by different amounts ( to stop phase cancelation)
You can find sample offset by highlighting G ( Group) ..... f5 ( Edit Group).... F2 (Tuning)......page2 tuning has Start Offset
You can get some super thick sounds this way.

No F5 option
If you do not get the F5 option it is for 2 reasons....

1. Your curser is not on the G1 ( group 1) area
2. It's already combined

Gee man,

You are clearly an expert !! i have got tons to learn !!

Now, i just spent 2 x HOURS trying to get the damn thing to work but i just can't seem to make it happen. i have been thru the manual pages and all your messages but it won't seem to happen for me !!!

For the life of me i can't get the F5 option to appear (but you say this may be because the patch is already 'combined'). And so i skipped the COMBINE procedure and went on straight to COPY. It stores it to the desired destination but i am having issues with it NOT being the exact same two samples which i layered before COPYING it (i only get ONE if in WHOLE MODE). See, what i don't get is that if i LAYER (say) a Trumpet and Violin, then COPY to a chosen destination, i am in LAYER MODE all thru this process. Now once saved i would have thought the Trumpet & Violin become a WHOLE (Single) patch. Now, when i switch MODE from LAYER to WHOLE i only get to hear the TRUMPET sample (without the Violin) ?? Does this mean that i need to stay in LAYER MODE all the time ?? This will be confusing because in a single Bank i would like to have WHOLE patches and LAYER patches. As i say, once the two samples are COMBINED then i thought these then become a SINGLE patch ??

i hope i am not wrecking your head to much here dude !! :???:

Best,

Paul

Get out of layer mode!

Combine does not combine layers it simply combines a presets multisamples into one group ready to copy into another existing preset.
It's copying the group to a destination preset that stacks the voices
Make sure you then select the destination preset to hear the results......

eg preset 001 Strings 1 copy to Preset 007 Synth Strings
Select Preset 007 it should now contain 2 groups Strings and Synth Strings.

Stick with the EMU it took me about a year of reading and poking around to master it, but it is so worth it with the fab filters and it has a modular architecture under the hood so the possibilities are almost limitless

Hi JF,

Ok, i pressed PRESET MANAGE, whist on Trumpet 001, then F4 COPY, then i selected DESTINATION PRESET which is Violin 002. Then it asks me if i want to OVERWRITE PRESET Trumpet ?? The only option here is to press OK (or abort the execution). Then i can RENAME the PRESET (eg. 'Tumpet & Violin').

The end result is that the Violin 002 is overwritten with Trumpet 001 and so i am just left with a single Trumpet sound (ie. not the desired Trumpet stacked with Violin).

Or have i done something wrong along the way ??

Really do appreciate your help.

Paul

Yep you need to be in PRESET EDIT mode, and have the group number you want to copy highlighted

What you are doing wrong is copying a preset in Preset manage and this will overwrite the preset destination with a copy of the selected preset.
Whereas in PRESET EDIT mode it ADDS the preset!

REMEMBER you are EDITING a preset, not MANAGING your presets

Now you can do this it would be possible to build presets that are layered
Just remember to set a different GROUP number for each layer and you can easily balance all the levels, pan, split points etc
Then EXPORT this newly created preset

Consider this as you read my never say never reply in your midi volume question.

No Export is different to save (read the Manual)

Ok, i see now. Export lets you keep the original Preset where it is, and store the modified Preset to another Bank. Cheers.
