Midi A / Midi B (Question)

Hi folks,
Is there anything in the manual regarding the usuage of the MIDI B ports on the rear of the EMU ?? i could not find it mentioned in any of the pages ??
i plugged the midi cable into MIDI B whilst in Multi Mode. I think it produces Midi Channels 17 thru 32 (compared to MIDI A which produces Midi Channles 1 thru 16).
Ta,
Paul

Yes, in Multi Mode MIDI Channels 17 thru 32 can be reached via MIDI Port B.

Thanks Mosrob,
Thats what i thought but i was not sure if i was 100% correct.
So could you have 1 x keyboard plugged into MIDI A In for channels 1 thru 16. And another keyboard plugged into MIDI B In for channels 17 thru 32 ??

Yes it's like you have two 16 channel samplers in one

Thanks man,
This is what i am thinking of trying to do is, or rather, this is the end result i would like to acheive :-
1 - To have my Nord connected to MIDI A In on the EMU (so transmitting on channels 1 thru 16).
2 - To have a seperate controller keyboard connected to MIDI B In on the EMU (so transmitting on channels 17 thru 32).
My goal is to have a choice of two worlds here :-
1 - To have the Nord sounds layered with the EMU sounds (ie. played/controled via the Nord keyboard only). So transmitting on Midi Channels 1-16.
2 - To be able to play/control the sounds on the EMU from a (dummy) controler keyboard transmitting on Midi Channels 17-32. And the Nord just playing sounds from the Nord (obviously the Nords External Controler Section will be turn OFF in this scenario).
This is to enable me to have the choice of playing both devices (ie.the EMU and the Nord) from the Nord (ie. Layered). Or to play the Nord in isolation with my left hand, and the EMU in isolation with my right hand (via the dummy controler keyboard). For instance, left hand piano on the Nord while playing right hand synth-lead on the controler keyboard (EMU).
WILL THIS WORK ????????? Or is it not possible ??

Paul

OMG, you are a genius for understanding all of that dude (and so quickly) !!!!! i was up thinking about it till about 5am last nite ha ha........ But i don't (at the moment) have a second keyboard to hook up to MIDI B In to try it out. So it was all just a bit of a random theory.
Anyway, do you think that would be a GOOD keyboard set up and configuration to have ?? In theory it would give me 2 x performance scenarios.

Here is the link to the site and manual of the CME UF controler keyboard i am thinking of getting. It looks like it should be able to do the job. Plenty of dials and sliders etc.

E-MU ultra users without the luxury of 2 midi in ports and 32 midi channels can still do this with a midi merge box
Just assign each keyboard to a separate midi channel and then send the channels into the single in port via the merger.
Then just select the presets for each channel in multi mode
You could even have a drummer with pads playing a drum kit set up on third channel if you have enough merger inputs on your merge box.
Hell even 16 keyboards if you wish
So in theory you could run 32 external keyboards into your sampler

Hey Monster,
if you get the UF series controller Let me know if and how you set up the CCs to control filter, adsr, etc.
I have not been able to get my UF 6 to do real time control of them It ( E6400) just doesn't respond.
It's unfortunate that the CME forum has been down for over a year now.
I wonder what is goin on with that company ?
Great controllers though.

Hi Sturoc,
Well i did try to access the CME forum and yes it seems to be discontinued. i have emailed their Technical Support Team to see if i can offer any advice via direct email, but not had a reply as yet. It is a shame if they no longer facilitate its online Community.
Do you think the problem you are having is with the CME UF or with the EMU ?? Is it that you can't get the Midi data to communicate between the two devices ?? i would have thought in theory that they should work ok together, though obviously i don't own a CME UF so have not been able to test it out ??

Paul

Not sure, I think the UF6 is communicating as I can bump thru presets.
A beautiful controller though. i see your looking at the UF gen 2 series of them.
I may get into it tonite and will update you.

The CME UF do not appear on ebay too often. Either people are hanging on to them, or CME don't make this particular model anymore (they have been superceded by the sliver coloured model). They seem quite pricey but i beleive they are very sturdy/robust, so the postage costs a bit extra for the weight.
Does you CME trigger notes but not Control Change messages ?? Or neither ??

CME put out the VX series after the UF but they kept the UF with some changes to them as well.
I have a 1st gen UF6 and I love it Metal chassis, nice layout, plenty of controls.
It does work well with my E6400s I can change presets, control volume, velocity, transpose. It controls the sequencer on the Emu as well.
It is communicating with the Emu's but just not in those areas of CC map of filter, adsr etc.
It has to be something I am not setting at the get go of mapping it all out.
Highly recommend this controller though and yeah they are a little heavy but no heavier than a synth of same size.
I've had mine since 2005 in studio only, no road usage. Think I paid $130 USD thru Ebay too. It was a great price.
