WORKAROUND: Windows 7 64bit / VMWare / SCSI E-MU 6400 Ultra

Hi Guys,

I have just upgraded to Windows 7 64 bit and realised that there is no applicable ASPI layer for it. The Adeptec ASPI driver provided by Adaptec only works on 32 bit OS capped at XP.

This is the work around :

1. Install VMWare player.
2. Install Adaptec SCSI driver for Vista in Windows 7. (You will need to install the driver manually via the have disk and select the correnct inf file)
3. Veryfy that the 8 EMU instances are present in device manager
4. Install Windows XP in the VMWare player.
5. Add custom hardware during VMWare player guest OS installation > Add Generic SCSI Device > add all 8 EMU SCSI instances from dropdown list.
6. Once Windows XP is intalled the EMU sampler should be visible in the device manager.
7. Download the ASPI layer from Adaptec and install in Windows XP.
8. Execute the ASPI Check program bundled with the ASPI layer and verify that the ASPI layer is installed.
9. Open Zero-X BeatCreator (For batch sample transfer) or Soundforge to which the Sampler should be visible.
10. Transfer your favourite samples across.

I have been experimenting with Zuonics ZoEOS which works in Windows 7 64bit however no ASPI layer means that you cannot transfer over SMDI. At present I use BeatCreator in the XP guest to send the samples across to the sample and ZoEOS in Win7 to manage the patch.

Hope this helps guys - it took days to figure out

Good news guys

Got midi pass through working too so I can completely control my E-MU via ZoEOS in the Windows XP Guest OS. I disables all MIDI ports that were not in use and voila!!!

So more years with my Emu.

Your solution is OK for the guys who don't want to use or can't use EOS 4.70.
When using EOS 4.70 (Ultra only) you can use a FAT32 formatted mass storage device for sample transfer.

Its the batch import functionality that I was really after. I can transfer in multi samples from one wave file using Beat Creator and key group them easily with ZoEOS. I just find it easier that way, especially for xfer of drum breaks.

I have just downloaded the java source for the zoeos project and i'm making some modifications. I'm going to try to split zoeos into 2 parts a client and a server. The server will be a headless application which runs in the guest os (WinXp) and listens for the aspi instructions. The client will be zoeos as we know it, but will work in win7. There will be some config to tell the client where the server is and what port to use. It will use Java RMI to create a transport layer between the two programs. What do u guys reckon to this idea? I don't want the gui running in xp just the aspi bit which is not supported in win 7.

I managed to mod zoeos to include the networking code. So a service runs in Xp which listens for commands from the windows 7 instance, effectively allowing me to run zoeos with scsi support in windows.

I have put together installers for zoeos service and gui client for all those who are interested in setting up the workaround previously discussed.

http://rapidshare.com/files/3608101068/zoeos-client-server-version.zip

To install:

1. Run "Setup Server.exe" on the XP intance with ASPI
2. Go into services and start the service.

3. Run "Setup Client.exe" on the Windows 7
4. Go into the Network option in the ZoEOS client and select "configuration"
5. Put the IP of the Virtual machine with XP/ASPI installed.
6. Click test connection button in the config dialog box
7. Click test ASPI to verify the configration
8. Have fun.

Tried this today, if i only had a scsi-card that can be installed in win7.....
The one i have is a pcmcia type, 1460, and is not supported.
Looks like i'm not away from my xp partition just yet.

Note: its not restricted to VMWare instances. You can use an old computer and install XP and the service providing there is a network interface and a SCSI card. That is the main benefit of this patch. So you should be able to get years of use out of the emu as the legacy bit has been completely abstracted away. Its is a SCSI to LAN adapter.
