Mosrob, thanks for the info here.

I'm getting a jaz drive soon as suggested by JAHFUNK. I assume the way to backup is to load each EOS bank into RAM, and then save it to external fat32 scsi drive. I can definitely do this with patience. I'm wondering, though, if you guys have better or faster ways?

Jahfunk, its very kind of you telling everybody that you belong to the guys with a simple mind.
You seem not being capable of removing the product logo from your screenshot.
How many virtual fart apps do you have installed on your iPad?

You know:

Would it not be possible to simply backup an image of the whole drive? I'm pretty sure that would be the easiest way to do it.

My backup route is simply dragging the whole shebang from a CF card connected to PC into a backup folder.

Even though CF is a pretty robust storage medium compared to drives.

Yes this would be the best way to go if the drive was formatted in FAT32, but unfortunately it's formatted in EOS FAT and Windows will not directly read this format, hence the workaround.
So......
The internal drive (formatted in EOS FAT) will be copied via SCSI to an external JAZ drive (formatted in FAT32)
The JAZ drive can then be read by a PC fitted with a SCSI card, and the files copied.

Now a new larger capacity drive can be formatted in FAT32.
From here on the drive will connect to a PC and work in the same way as your CF card.
All the saved files can be added, and the drive mounted inside the EMU.

Alternatively, a removable HD bay could be fitted, improving access to the HD
When compared to a CF reader a hard drive is not as sturdy, but adding a removable drive bay it's currently a cheap upgrade that makes backups and transfers a breeze.

What you need is a "sector per sector" cloner such as Clonezilla. It will clone any drive, anything that has ones and zeroes on it regardless of the system.

How would this be useful to upgrade to a larger drive formatted in FAT32?

If the drive to be cloned is smaller than target drive its not a problem, you can do it all the same.
For backup its a fine solution IMHO.

Yes you would indeed have a EXACT copy of the hard drive.

The result would be a clone of the original but on a larger drive and it would therefor still be formatted in EOS FAT .

This drive is still not readable by a computer.

If you cloned the data to a 120 GB drive it would only show up as 18 GB in the sampler as this is the max that EOS FAT can handle.

If however the data is to be added to a large IDE drive formatted in FAT32 to overcome these limitations then the best route is the procedure I have outlined.

The sampler would need to be running EOS4.7 as this is the only operating system able to work with drives formatted in FAT32.

EOS4.7 will recognise a maximum 137 GB. Which should keep the majority of users happy for a while.

Oh I see now what you mean. You are right, in order for the backup to be accessible it would have to be done the way you outlined. I was thinking in terms of pure archival type backup.
