Sound Design Resources

Hi there,

I'm really getting my head around the sampler more and more. Just recently I got some interest in sound design and I'm really keen on knowing how to utilize the sampler for that. Does anybody have some good resources? I'm not talking about stacking FX on top of each other but using the samplers typical functions for that. I'm just realizing the EMU is capable of A LOT!

Hmm, most resources focus on substractive synthesis. For example the Rob Papen book (+ DVDs). Whereas a sampler has much broader functions.

I hate to say this cos i know you said your not keen of it, but you could always try the manual, it's really informative

Yeah I read the manual. Still kinda hate it ;) Glad you remember. I'm still not sure when to use links and certain other functions of the sampler. Also I'm looking for inspirations and typical workflows...

Things to try...

Watch some music tutorials on YouTube (with a little lateral thought these concepts can be worked around using the sampler)

Sampling VST soft synths such as massive, Sylenth, and the excellent and free "Synth One" can be good starting points for waveforms to mangle, remember to detune, pitch offset, these layers. Modulate the filters, amp and pitch with LFOs, midi clocks and envelopes.

Layer synth samples with different filter types and settings to achieve the frequency content you need.

FIR (phase linear filter) is a great tool to alter frequency content.

Aphex aural exciter is great for adding a bit of filth to basses.

There is nothing like the hands on control that c/controllers add for tweaking sounds on the fly. It is worth investing some time in building some sound design banks that can be used as templates for future experiments.
I will post up a bank of clock templates in the lab section soon to get you started.

Man Jahfunk thanks a lot, you're like one of the most important people to this forum, honestly.

Yeah for sampling synths I think I will go back to my beloved reason 3, which I didn't open for at least 4 years. Just realized what a great program it is!

I'm not only interested in developing musical content, but crazy soundfx stuff too... But maybe knowledge just comes with practise :)

I just posted this tip in another thread, but you should try the Emulator X Advanced Apps Guide. A lot of tricks work on the hardware samplers as well.

Thank you! Great tip! Downloaded it yesterday and read a bit and I'm astonished at how little I know about sampling!
