Which one?
Syba Best Connectivity 2.5 IDE to CF card adapter
Syba 2.5 Compact Flash to Dual Interface SATA/USB adapter
Startech 3.5 inch SATA to CompactFlash bay

Obviously the first one is the cheapest way if you only want an internal SSD as it is IDE (doesn't require the SAK-65) and is only £12 delivered. I cant guarantee it works but I cant see why not.

It seems we suddenly have quite a few more storage choices.

Is it possible to keep the internal IDE hard disk connected as well with this mod?

And will the floppy power on the mother board be enough to power the SAK-65 and a Hard Disk caddy?

Short answer: No.

On the IDE-bus EOS can only access a single device that is configured as MASTER.
You can use the SAK-65 adapter with the caddy and an internal SCSI HD.

Hi everyone,

I received my Crucial M500 120 Gb SSD, it worked right out of the box with the SAK-65 8-)
I gotta big unique Fender Rhodes patch that weights 52 Mbs that I've been using for tests :
on my CF SCSI driver it loads in 34 seconds; on the SSD it loads in 20s (doesn't mind if the drive is FAT or E-Mu, I did both tests).

Fast, silent, reliable ... what else do you need for this price ?!?
- SAK-65 : 20 € or so
- M500 120 Gb : 65 €

I'll keep my CF card driver (mounted in place of the old floppy bay) as it is very convenient to exchange data with the outside world (and adds 32 Gb more ;) ), but I'm sure the option of having the SSD into an extractible bay also works fine.

Cheers guys, thanks a lot for that SAK-65 thingy. It's been such a long time many people here wanted to feed their ultras with good SATA SSDs without bothering about compatibility issues ...

Long life to EmusOnAcid !!

First i will try the ICY BOX way and then the direct CF to
SATA route.

Oh well, thanks for that. Was hoping I could get the data off my internal HD and onto a removable disk this way. The drive doesn't show up in Translator so I haven't got an easy solution for transferring the data.

If the IDE HD is formatted in FAT32 remove it from the sampler and hook it up to the device below.
You can then copy the contents and transfer the data to a new SATA drive using the same dock.

NEW USB 3.0 Dual 2.5"-3.5" SATA+IDE HDD Hard Disk Drive Dock Docking Station

Price:£14.39 Free delivery

If you want to spend a couple more quid you can find docks with CF card readers built in too, like this one

2.5" 3.5" Dual SATA IDE Hard Disk Drive HDD Dock Docking Station Stand All in 1

Price £15.95 free delivery

@aerodrink. This sounds like a good setup. Thanks for the update.

@Tarelizer. I would be interested to hear how you get on, be carful as someone on Amazon said the SATA CF card adapter has a slightly higher profile than a standard HD, this might make it a bit of a tight fit in the Icy Box bay!

Syba Compact Flash to Dual Interface SATA II and USB 2.0 2.5 inch Adapter
Form Factor: (100.2mm x 69.9mm x 9.8mm)

Standard 2.5” SATA Storage Device
Form Factor: (100 mm x 96.85 mm x 9.5mm)

It's only 0.3 mm higher, so it should fit OK but I thought I'd point it out.

Hey JahFunk,

sorry for my short reply.

I`m looking for a nice solution to swap my files around from PC to my EMU Samplers (E64 and E6400Ultra with CF).

In the past, i spent a lot of time to get my sample library into my E64. Via Zip Disk, an old Version of Translator and EMULATOR X3 i could reduce the effort a little bit. I think i will try a newer version of translator (Ver.6).

Load Samples in the Ultra, create Presets, then connect the E64 to the Ultra via SCSI and i have access to my banks. This one is much easier to handle as the sensible CF Card Reader with their tiny contacts.

I won`t post the parts again (i think the most here know what i mean).

The Ulra will get first the SATA HDD solution with an Icy Box Bay. It is really easy to connect a SATA Drive to a computer.

The next step is the CF route: i will try first the SATA to HDD Adapter for the ICY BOX when it was successful, i will try the 3,5" CF to SATA Reader.

As some others pointed out that their devices (old computers) see the CF as a HDD, i assume it must work in the ULTRA too. The Ultra can´t handle ATAPI, since the SAK-65 is an IDE Adapter it may emulate the IDE Standard which the EMU understands too.

The IDE to CF Syba Best Connectivity 2.5" IDE 44-pin to Dual Compact Flash Adapter is interesting, but not handy for swapping the drives.

Add:

The formfactor is about 0,2mm higher. May the tolerance of fabrication can handle that 0.2 mm.

You can then copy the contents and transfer the data to a new SATA drive using the same dock.

Sadly the IDE drive is in Emu format. I have tried to view the drive with Translator on my PC but the drive doesn't show up.

did you refreshed the screen in translator? A button on the upper left corner, clockwise arrow

Yeah, tried launching Translator before and after attaching the drive, refreshing etc. Just wouldn't show up. Odd cos I've used ZIP disks in this way for years. Never tried with a hard drive before though.

I,m assuming you're running EOS4.7

As Mosrob has said the answer lays with a SCSI HD. Use the backup tool in the E-mu to copy you're IDE HD to a SCSI HD internal or external. Then format the IDE drive to FAT. You can now backup the data from the SCSI drive onto the FAT IDE Drive. Once this drive is connected to a PC a full backup of all contents is possible as the computer can see the drive.
This backup can be used to transfer your stuff onto a new SATA drive.

If you have a SCSI card on your PC you could backup the data from you're IDE drive to an External SCSI HD (formatted in FAT) then you just need to transfer the data from the SCSI drive to the PC via the card.

How much data do you have on your drive?
Do you have a SCSI HD?

Well after robbing some parts from the Scsi-IDE CF card reader installed in my ESI4000 I have managed to get the data transferred to the new drive. For some reason the Backup function gives a 'Device is full' error some way into the backup process. Doing further incremental backups seems to be the work round. Thanks for the pointers everyone

Fitted and can confirm the SAK-65/ICY BOX SATA bay combo are working.

A few tips
Have a very fine drill bit to hand for drilling out the centre hole in the IDE ribbon connector.
Also create a depth gauge using a piece of tape on the bit (to avoid going too deep)
The two rear mounting screws line up with the E-MU case but you will need to drill or use self tapping screws for the front two.
Set the SAK-65 switch to device and not host.
Substitute the SAK-65 SATA power cable for the one included with the ICY BOX bay, as this one has extra connectors that are needed to power the bay light.
Fix the IDE connector so the writing on the SAK-65 is towards the outer casing.

A fairly straight forward job, even for a technophobe like me.

@Tarelizer The bay seems like it has the tolerance of a few mm , and will probably take the CF HDD thingy ;)
