Beat Munger!!!

I use this alot, the thing is when I sample a loop and munge it - yes it finds the BPM and I manage to get a loop out of it and then draw it in my sequencer and it loops, BUT! It's just not that perfect....am I doing wrong? I don't want to mention the package but I use it alot to CHOP and TRANSMIT loops to my sampler - this package is ultra tight for loops, so what's up with the Munger?

i actually don't use the beat munger too much. pretty much just to find the bpm of something. i believe there is a quantize feature on it. and i know that sometimes if you cut a loop a certian way that you will actually get a completely different bpm count. so that might be the issue.

i love my emu, very much. but there are certian things i do not let it do. kind of like a kid i guess. one thing i don't let it do is trim and turnicate my samples. and i sure as hell wont let it make a loop for me. i do every thing by myself on it. the only thing i let my sampler do really is normalize. even sometimes with that it can be a problem.

i am sure that some one else might have a better idea. i migh play with it and see if i can replicate the same issues.

Ill truncate and edt samples on the emu, but I wont normalize on it
hhmmm, different worlds I guess eh Sampleandhold?
hehe

I won't truncate, trim or normalize in the emu so take that! =)

hehehe

It is true... the beat munger is pretty dodgy. I only use it myself to check the bpm of a quick 1 bar loop. It is fairly accurate that way. I can then change the tempo using timestretching to adjust it as I need. The Beat munger is kinda cool only in a way that you can set a 'groove' feel to it and set beats at off points to give it a totally new feel.. nothing too special and can be done in cubase as well with much better results. I will NOT use beat munging for cutting stuff up. The results are simply horrid and prefer recycle over it anyday and a half.

the emu is actually quite powerful, and once you get to know it, you can do more with it. i am now actualy using not only for beats but for sound design. I think this is the kind of idea that this site is, to combine all of us together to get better understandings of the unit. if fourty of us mess around in it for one hour a day, that day can be translated to one person spending fourty hours on it. assuming that hour was used successfuly.

as for the featurs on our emu, or any other software/ hardware unit. there are always going to be features that someone is not going to like or want. for example, i don't care about the sampler turnicating and trimming my samples. it tends to fuck them up. so i would have not cared if they didn't put it on the eos. as for the beat munger. it is a neat tool, just that well, i would rather make my beats on my own. i would feel in better control. and i will beable to take the little stuff that the emu might miss because of the algorythm.

as for not being scientists... that is true alot of us aren't, but i am finding that as the years go by and i continue to produce drum and bass, the more science plays into things. when you are making sounds from scratch you got to have an idea of what you are doing and how the waves are going to reach to each other. but i am still at the tweak and pray stage... but i am getting better.

it would be cool if they offered a custom emu, one that you can choose everything right down to the colour.

I don't like the munger either. I really just use it to find the BPM that the EMU is seeing. Then I SCSI into Soundforge and timestretch there. Then I SCSI it back to the EMU. I do this so the BPM on the EMU and the sequencer in Cubase really do match. If you timestretch only in Soundforge, then SCSI to the EMU, the BPM's between the EMU and sequencer are always a little bit off.

Munger is good for quick and dirty work. I use it somewhat often.

Recycle I've NEVER gotten anything good out of. I prefer chopping my stuff by hand w/ SF or WaveLab. Or doing my beats in ACID.

Just curious...how can you NOT get anything good out of recycle? You can set your cut points with or without the aid of the peak sensing in recycle. Anything you can do by hand you can do in recycle...can't you??

I dunno, the workflow just doesn't do it for me... That's why I like ACID - total freestyle action ;)

beat mung beat mung and more mung

I use thing alot to determine approx BPM of a break, the best thing about this is that it gives you real time timestretch and if you have a break around 120 and put it through this thing, you can speed it up to see whether it's worth chopping for a drum n bass loop perhaps or even breakbeat...etc etc....as you know some loops sound crap when they're stretched....but imagine emu tighten this thing up and gave you the possibilty of recycle in the sampler - then that would be tooo easy I guess - not creative enough.....I got so bogged down one day once I wrote a program in Matlab to chop breaks - which gave precise control over the chopping ....anyway :grumble:
