The absolute Basics

I know this will sound mundane to those of you who've been sampling for years, but I'm still learning the very basics.

Can any of you tell me, or link me to a good reference on:

1.) What is a pre-set/voice/bank? How do I use these, how do I create them?

2.)when i've got a sample loaded, how do i apply filters/effects etc...

3.) any other basic stuff you might think is valid...

Thanks in advance.

Jason

I use my sampler like this

You have Folders > Banks > presets > samples

Folders just hold the tune, banks I use as a full tune, so i load a bank and my tune is all ready to go. Presets I group like synths, bass, drums etc, different indtruments get different presets, but if the samples are similier ill try to group them togather
Filters can be found when your in 'preset edit' move your highlighter ove G1 (groupl 1 )and hit edit group (this will affect all samplers in that preset in group 1)
After that hit your 'page next' button twice and youll see the filter page. HAVE FUN!

DS-1 is right - I just want to expand on what he said:

folder>bank>channel>preset>group>voice>sample

This is the hierarchy in the EMU. The first thing that you want to do is ensure that your EMU is in Multimode. I can't remember off of the top of my head how to do this but refer to the index and look it up. Your sampler will not automatically start in this mode and it is important that you set it up this way. The screen should look something like this:

channel - preset - pan - vol
CH1 l 000EMPTYPRESET l 0 l 127
CH2 l 000EMPTYPRESET l 0 l 127
CH3 l 000EMPTYPRESET l 0 l 127
CH4 l 000EMPTYPRESET l 0 l 127
etc ...

In order to create a Preset go to Preset Manage > hit NEW > hit OK (it asks you if 001EMPTYPRESET is where you want the new preset) > name your preset > you should now see a screen that looks vaguely like this:

V1 l G1l 000EMPTY SAMPLE l 0 l +0 l 0 l 0 l C4

If you don't see this screen you may have to make sure the menu is on VOICE (as opposed to GLOBAL or LINK). At this point you need to get a sample. You can load it from a pre-existing bank (assuming you have one). You can also send one from your computer's hard drive via SCSI (there are many articles on this website about setting this up). Finally, you can record a sample into the EMU: Go to Sample Manage > Hit NEW > Record your sample.

Now go to Preset Manage. Find the Preset you just created. Hit Preset Edit. Put the sample you just got into the voice. Now it should look something like this:

V1 l G1 l 001 MYFIRSTSAMPLE l 0 l +0 l 0 l 0 l C4

You can split the voice into 2 voices that occupy different zones on the keyboard. In your Preset Edit screen (in the VOICE section) hit UTIL > hit Split > hit OK (it will ask you if D#3 is an ok note on which to split the voice > Now the screen should look like this:

V1 l G1 l 001 MYFIRSTSAMPLE l 0 l +0 l 0 l 0 l C4
V2 l G1 l 001 MYFIRSTSAMPLE l 0 l +0 l 0 l 0 l C4

Change it to this:

V1 l G1 l 001 MYFIRSTSAMPLE l 0 l +0 l 0 l 0 l C2
V2 l G1 l 001 MYFIRSTSAMPLE l 0 l +0 l 0 l 0 l C4

Now you have 2 copys of the sample which you can modulate in different ways - or - together (one copy is at C2 and the other at C4). To modulate together do everything I'm about to say only get to the menu by hitting Global and then EDIT ALL. Or highlight G1 and then hit Edit Group.

Highlight V1 > hit EDIT VOICE > hit AMP/FILT > hit the PREV or NEXT button until you see a screen that looks vaguely like this (you will only be modulating V1 - not V2):

4-Pole Lowpass

Freq: 20000
Q: 0

Have fun! This menu has lots of other fun stuff like tuning (chorus/flange) options and routing options (on the cords page - see other articles in this forum).

Wow, I'm really fucking off at work today!

Oh .. I forgot. You must put the preset in the channel:

Hit exit until you're at the main screen.

change it from:

CH1 l 000EMPTYPRESET l 0 l 127
CH2 l 000EMPTYPRESET l 0 l 127
CH3 l 000EMPTYPRESET l 0 l 127
CH4 l 000EMPTYPRESET l 0 l 127
etc ...

to:

CH1 l 001MYFIRSTPRESET l 0 l 127
CH2 l 000EMPTYPRESET l 0 l 127
CH3 l 000EMPTYPRESET l 0 l 127
CH4 l 000EMPTYPRESET l 0 l 127
etc ...

You'll have to do this for each channel and preset to get sound.
