Where does it actually go in side the sampler (E4K)?

As far as I can remember, it has two slots for sample RAM, two ROM slots and nothing else!

Correct me if I'm wrong!

I'm pretty sure that you are right. The E4K has Flash memory integrated onto the PCB I believe, unlike the racks which have traditional memory slots. I would like to be wrong about this, though.

If I remember right (and I'm not going to haul the sampler out of the rack and open the case just to find out)...

OK, if you've got the front panel facing you, the slots for ROM and Flash RAM sound simms (NOT CPU FLASH MEMORY) are on the left about a third of the way back, a block of four simm slots, with the sample RAM slots on the right and the sound ROM/RAM slots on the left.

The CPU Flash is closer to the front panel on the right, just to one side of the disc drive. I seem to recall two small memory slots right there (or it might have been just one), running left to right instead of front to back like the other ones.

I have no idea at all about the hardware arrangement inside the E4K, as I've never actually seen one in real life. But I think they required a factory return to install the upgrade CPU Flash (because, as mentioned, they had the CPU Flash integrated onto the main board).

However... I'm dubious about the claim that this CPU Flash will work in the older EIV and E64. I seem to recall reading somewhere that they couldn't take the memory upgrade to run the 4.0+ operating systems, as they had a completely different design of main board... or maybe that was just in regards to using the various upgrade add-ons (8 outs, extra MIDI, etc.).

DISCLAIMER: I may be completely wrong on this, as my memory is flaky at times, and I've been having a bad mental health week.

Has anyone here successfully upgraded the CPU Flash memory on an E4K? I just bought one of the chips and now I'm thinking I wasted the money after reading this.

I will let you know in the next day or so - I have the 2MB ROM and according to the documentation in the box it came in - the E4K can take this ROM but it has to be soldered.

So I am going to take my E4K into my local tech to do this for me.

As correctly stated by a previous poster - rack mount samplers are all slotted into 'sockets' - whereas on the E4K the ROM has to be soldered on board but the RAM memory is NOT soldered and is in normal sockets.

I also have all the various EOS (last night I installed the 3.0b EOS) and that is working fine.

Will write more in the next few days.

What's the score here? Did you upgrade it successfully? I got my memory today, but it on had a piece of paper with it that said slide it into a slot.

Hi - well I did have the 2MB ROM - as my EIV was already in the shop I got them to clip the 2MB into the EIV (rack mount) - I was intending to stick it in the E4K as I thought the EIV already had 2MB.

But - the other hassle was getting the E4K into the shop!

You say "you got your memory" - do you mean the ROM? If so - yes - the instructions (paper) say it will go into a slot - what they mean is that it slides into a slot of a rack mount - just like a RAM chip. With the E4K the old ROM has to be unsoldered and the new ROM soldered in.

But - I am on the lookout for another 2MB ROM which I promise I will get installed into my E4K!

When you got your ROM - does it have any reference on the packaging or paper instructions to "#6854 (EOS Link)"?

If so - as that is what I had - I believe that will contain the 2MB ROM chip - and the instructions do say it will clip into a rack mount sampler but there is I believe a reference to the E4K and that the ROM needs to be soldered.

The flash memory I can suggest for you dosn't match for E4K!
E4K use two chips with EOS and you have to solder them on the main board!
E4K dosn't have slot for System Flash Memory!!!!!!!!!!

Several folk I have spoken to (including an E4K user) say it will work - only thing as I say - is that it has to be soldered...

I could be wrong!

If you want to upgrade E4K you must to know next:

"CPU Flash RAM Upgrade for the E4K. Included with
6855 kit":

WARNING
"This modification should only be performed by E-mu Systems Authorized Service Centers or E-mu Authorized Technical Personnel! It requires surface mount soldering and desoldering expertise. E-mu Systems, Inc. will not be held responsible for damage caused by the incorrect or improper
installation of this modification.

This modification increases the CPU Flash RAM of an E4K
from 1 MB to 2 MB. The CPU Flash RAM holds the EOS operating system. The amount of CPU Flash RAM also determines how many flash sequences and presets can be stored in the E4K. This update is necessary in order to update the E4K to EOS version 4.01 software....

Phillips head screwdrivers #1 and #2
Surface mount soldering equipment
Small pointed tool or pick
Kit Contents:

All another models of E-mu samplers may be upgraded very easy. Just install new simm module CPU Flash RAM 2MB.

Yep - I had the 6855 kit and thats where I got my info from - instead in my case I had it put into my EIV (which is just clipped in).

where did you get the 6855 kit from? are these stll available on the net somewhere? I really need to upgrade from 3.0b and I only had 1mb rom installed. (on an e4x)
