emusonacid!

I'm an emu n00b. Just got a esi4000. But I am confused. I have no idea how to hear the dynamic processing effects (i.e. filters, lfos). I'm sure they work, but when I press the audition button, there is no change in the sound I hear. It just plays the sampled sound. How do I hear the dynamically processed sound?
Much thanks, I don't know if this is a case of not being able to find it in the huge manual, or just being stupid, but please help me.
