emusonacid!

The power supply fan on my 6400 ultra seems quite noisy (comparatively) and I was wondering if anyone had replace the fan on theirs with a quiet fan or has any other advice on making it quieter (short of removing it completely :D )

I've removed it from the rack it's mounted in and it seems a little quieter then (some of the rattle disappears) but it still seems comparatively noisy for a piece of studio gear (especially compared to my yamaha 01v which is silent).

I don't think the fan is faulty, but it is noticeably louder than my pc now i've replaced the power supply in that with a silent psu.

It's not the end of the world cos I usually have the music so loud I can't hear it anyway :D , but if anyone knows of a suitable silent fan to replace it with then I'd appreciate the info.

Apparently some users have disconnected the fan with no problems. If you've got an internal HD though the EMU will need it. Mines noisy as well, quite high pitched whirr (almost like fog horns at rave but not quite as loud!) There is some stuff about on the yahoo groups about changing the fan, I'll see if I can get any more info.

Cheers, I don't have an internal drive right now but I'm planning on getting one quite soon, so I think I'd best not disable the fan entirely. I've searched the google groups but didnt find anything useful. I'll try yahoo groups later. If not I'll have a close look at the fan and see if I can find a place that sells silent fans of the same dimensions and power requirements.

ewwww. one thing about the fan issue. you have a sampler that retails now for what 999, or more. the fan is there to keep the unit cool, and that makes the unit run faster and last longer. i would be really hesitant to remove the fan. the only way i would ever remove the fan is if, and only if i got a refrig unit for the emu. that whole thing about disabling the fan makes me really neverous.
my emu the fans seems to be, noraml, i guess. i think changing the fan would be the best, maybe they switched over to a cheap fan during production. you might actually try lubercating the fan, i would call a manufacture of pc fans and see what kind of oil/grease, they use, if any. that might help the noise. but replacing it might be the over all best solution.

yeah im with sampleandhold on this one, dont disable it, its there for a reason. Mines loud as hell, but you get used to it

i was thinking of placing a little switch so you can turn the fan on/off... or am i freakin' out here
