HDD Installation

Guys, I'm having trouble with my E6400 Ultra. I'm trying to install an IDE drive, but as soon as I hook it up the machine no longer boots. I'm wondering if it is power related, perhaps? Incidentally, I'm using a Molex cable salvaged from an old PC rather than the official Emu pack. That shouldnt be a problem, should it? :???:

Have you reversed the polarity on the power supply?

Thanx Wigworld.
Not deliberately. The molex plug only fits one way into the HDD and the floppy type plug only fits one way onto the board. I was thinking maybe it was drawing too much current, perhaps. I'm stuck for ideas.

No, E-mu hooked up the power socket on the main board with the polarity reversed so that you'd have to buy their special kit with it's own reversed-reverse plug (sneaky bastards!). If you want to do-it-yourself, you have to reverse two of the wires on your drive power cable or you'll risk frying the drive, the sampler, or both (or at the very least, have no joy from your new drive).

Thanks so very much. That info is priceless.
Tomorrow I'll reverse the cables. In the meantime I'm praying the drive is OK. The sampler booted fine so I know there's no issues there (phew).

Thanks again.

Just wanted to say thanks again, Vermis.
Got my HDD successfully installed this morning. I've transfered several CD-ROMs to the drive and now got a bank flagged for 'auto-load'. I only wish I'd bothered to do this sooner. I love this gear! :spliff:
