e6400 internal drive mounting headaches

Howdy all? Sirry my first post here is a whine. I'm usually pretty savvy with things like this, but this time I'm finding my hands in the curse-filled air.
Just picked up a pretty mint e6400 (not ultra), with EOS v 4.01 in it. I'm trying to install a 9 GB SCSI HD in it, but I'm a little shaky on jumper pin configs. It's a "newer" drive so there's an adapter, but the adapter has jumper pins on it too. Do the jumper pins on the adapter have to be set and matching the drive, or should the jumpers be off of the adapter? In the manual the described drives are Mac (if installed), Emulator, several unassigned, then the sampler itself. If I'm reading this correctly, I should be assigning to the lowest unassigned drive, setting both the pins on the drive and the adapter to assign the SCSI ID, but so far the sampler just doesn't want to see the damn drive. I'm also going to see if I can't find another scsi ribbon cable around.
Funny thing is this: normally the red line on the cable goes to pin 1, right? Well, if I unplug the cable from the board and the drive, at boot up, it just scrolls through drive numbers quickly. If I connect it with the red going to pin 1, it does the same thing. Turn it around so the the red stripe on the cable goes to pin 2 on the board and it seems to scroll through the numbers more slowly, whether the drive itself is plugged in or not. The drive powers up and sounds like it's spinning, and its LED comes on, so I know the adapter at least works that far.
I must confess to being a bit confused and frustrated. I'm sure it's probably just one dinky little detail, like a jumper setting, but I've been going at this thing for a while and gettinno love. Of course it could just be that the drive is incompatible and that's the end of the story.
Any thoughts or advice?
Do I set the sampler for SCSI ID 6 then turn the termination ON? DO I set the drive for SCSI ID 1?
The drive is a Fuji 9GB 7200 wide ultra 2 SCSI 12v 0.95 amp drive. AS far as I can tell, that's a spec within tolerances and the drive does fire up when plugged in. The power cable inside the sampler matches the configuaration and color scheme of the power cable to the floppy drive, so I am assuming that it's from Emu.

you are going to need to find a manual or info sheet about the drive, that would normally ship with the drive when sold. That is probably the only way to find out exactly what the jumper settings mean for that specific drive.
I think I read that an internal SCSI drive should be terminated and the sampler itself should not be terminated, but I am not too sure on that.

Thanks for the response. I'm SOL on the info sheet for the drive. It came as a bonus with the sampler off eBay. It specs correctly, and the jumpers ettings are labeled but there are some things I don't quite get, like an 8-bit adapter and how that works with a wide ultra SCSI addressing system, like whether the top 8 bits are ignored automatically under that protocol or not. Other things like "single/wide", "startcmd" settings, or "diffsens"...whuh? I've been trying to read up on that stuff, ut just not finding jack. Also, don't know howw the adapter needs to be set, if at all. Like I say, I'm at a loss here. I've been trying all kinds of stuff, but still nothing yet. Adapter says things like "LED", "REM", "DLY". I'm going to try some of these things and see if anything improves.
Also, might you be able to find where you read that about internal termination turned off. I haven't found it yet. Thanks.

As to the termination of the drive I found that on here, best bet is just to read the whole forum I have found.
As to the info sheet for the drive, I would suggest going to google and looking up the manufacturer, and searching their archives, and failing that then searching for information on the exact model of drive. There will be some info somewhere for it, its more just a matter of locating where it is. Good luck.
Also it sounds like you have a drive and then an adaptor for the drive, I'd try and find whatever you can about both. End of the day if you cant get it working, scsi drives are quite cheap.

well...found the info for the drive, but nothing for the adapter. Tried messing with the jumper settings, but nothing works yet.
gonna see if I can upload a pic of the adapter. Guess I'll look into other drives too. SCSI drives are cheap, but honestly, trying to find one that's small enough, has the right draw, etc.. these days is really the hard part.
I even showed this stuff to a couple of expert friends and folks all seem to tell me the same thing, but no matter how closely I follow the advice, the e6400 doesn't see the drive.
One thing to note though that when I set what appears to be the termination on the drive, address it to what appears to be ID 2, then set the sampler for ID 0, and turn the sampler's termination OFF, it hangs up on SCSI ID 1. I'm stumped at this point.

yeah I'm looking into a direct SCSI1 to IDE converter and then using 2.5 drives from now on

That doesn't sound like such a bad idea. Also looking into 68 pin, as I have a 50pin-68pin convertor as well, without all of the crazy jumper settings on the adapter.
Ugh...what an annoyance. Well, looks like it's time to pull out the old external Zip drive. GRRRRRRRR.

to be honest you are better getting new stuff that you can get the spec for, than trying to work out antique stuff, added to the fact that drives last for about five years of use

Depends where you are to be honest, I just found Span, who seem to still sell a range of SCSI converters

They're uk based though, although I imagine you have something like wherever it is you are. If the converter is adaptec based have you tried looking it up on their site?

This is the same unit thats on ebay I mentioned for 15 quid ($30 US Dollar-Pesos ;-)
Acard - they work, and make an IDE drive look like a SCSI drive.
Also supports ATAPI which the Ultras IDE interfaces doesn't.

kalide do you have experience of these units? have you tried one of the ones from ebay?
I definitely think I am going to get one of these, for my akai at least, and for my e6400 if fixable

I have 3 of them.
As with others in the forum, they seem to work well.
