cd rom issue

Hi.
I'm running EOS 3.0b on a E4XT.
I tried connecting an external cd-rom drive. The ESXT can "see" it into the scsi chain, but can't read data on the CD
I tried with several CDs, all of them legit (original!) EMU CDs.
It just says "no banks on the drive".
It doesn't freeze, and can read the other drives.
Is this a known problem?

Perhaps the cd-rom drive isn´t compatible!
I had similar problem in the past, with cd-rom drives and harddisks.
The EOS 3.0 can see a lot of them, but can´t work with them!
Look for a drive with 4xspeed maximum.

thx.
Is 4.7 any better under that profile?
I'm getting a 5000 ultra with 4.7 in a few days. If it's less finicky, I'll use THAT sampler for loading from CDs.
Finding old, slow CD drives is difficult.

I can sell you one! But I only have the bare drives, no SCSI enclosures.
I've tested my Akai S1100 sampler with these drives and they have all worked, and the S1100 is one of the more picky samplers out there.
They're all old Apple (Matsushita, now known as Panasonic) drives. They do not self terminate, so can't go last in the chain unless you use
a terminator with them.
Whereabouts are you? Postage costs might be a problem.

Could it be scsi id channel or termination issue?

I don't think so: 1) I am aware of the issue and I checked both, 2) the CD drive appears in the EMU's disk menu. The EMU just can't read the data on it (and the data could be read by my old E-64's CD, a vintage "apple" unit).
Odd.
The "read speed" idea is probably the right one... darn!

I got a scsi case.
And yeah, I remember I used a old "apple"(matsushita) cd with my previous e-64. That would be good.

Ok, before we get involved with you getting a drive off me there might be a couple of things to try.
The conventional wisdom regarding the Akai S1100 was that only 2x, 4x and Plextor drives were certain to work, but I got
a Teac CD-532S working with the Akai. This is a 32x speed drive, but the Akai was ok with it when the drive was set to
operate in 512 bytes/sector mode rather than 2048 bytes/sector which is the modern convention.
At some point in CDROM development all drives became 2048 bytes/sector unless hard jumpered to 512 bytes/sector,
whereas, previously I believe that drives would accept a command over the SCSI bus to switch between 512 and 2048
depending on what messages were sent by the host. This is where the compatibility issues arise - some drives will not
recognise the command sent on power up to switch block size. This is only my own theory!
What drive are you trying to use with your E-mu? The actual model number of the drive that is, do you have a data sheet
for it that shows all the jumper settings? There could be a jumper for block size that might be worth trying. When trying
out drives I always set the SCSI ID to 0 (no jumpers on), parity check to on (usually jumper on), termination to on if available
(usually jumper on), and then I just check the drive with block size 512 (usually jumper on) or 2048.
The E-mu e5000 Ultra has been able to use every drive I've ever tried on it, including CDR drives.
The old Panasonic drives I have seem pretty decent, I've tested them all as working 100% in the last couple of weeks, but
of course I have no idea how long they would last over the long term. I was surprised at how quiet they were, but I guess
they're running at lower speeds than modern ones, so they're going to be a bit quieter.
If you end up needing a drive, well they cost me about $6 to $7 each (I got a lot of 5) so I will sell one for $5 plus postage.

I have no specifics sheet.
I forwarded your comments to the guy who sold me the drive.
If he can't answer, 5 or 7 bucks won't kill me.

If you have the make and model of the drive we can search the internet for a data sheet?

Here I am.
The CD drive is marked "TRAXDATA pro-series"
it carries no s/n, no model number, no part number, nothing.
It has no volume control on the front panel, but it's got the two RCA audio outs.

I'm afraid you're going to have to open up the SCSI case and see what is the make and model of the CD drive inside. :)

uhm... you should have asked me to do that when I was 5.
At the time I could open any known device [from fire engines to cats] without caring about warranties, returns and/or making a mess.
And I could reassemble more or less anything [from spitfires to furniture] reemplying more than 90% of the original parts. Some I got always in excess, but never more than 10%.
Now I am old and fearful.
In a few days I'll get a new samplr and a new CD reader. If THEY don't work, I'll open the traxdata. If it does, I'll return it.

I got hold of a different CD drive and it works fine.
No scsi issue, no cable issue, just a damn non-compatible CD drive (probably too fast)
Gonna return it, and keep the new one.
Just FYI and in order to close the thread.
thx to everybody for the information
