Hi, i bought and EIV classic of eBay.

When i power it up, the SCSI and MIDI Leds are lightened, then after a few seconds they turn black. The screen does not show anything at all at boot up. Minus i can see the backlight functioning.

It was not written in the auction but the seller told me there was a hard disk Inside (in fact he said EOS 2.51A / 128 CH CARD / 128MB / MIDI CARD / 2GB HD
) so i opened the sampler to see if something was disconnected but to my surprise there is no hard disk Inside.

I don't have a floppy to try it out yet.

But my question is: does the sampler is supposed to show something on bootup screen even if no hard disk or floppy are inserted ? I don't remember i didn't touch a Emulator since years.

During boot up the EIV tries to access the floppy drive (looking for EOS-update) and scans the SCSI-bus for drives.
At this time EOS does not show on which SCSI-ID a device and what type of device is found.
After boot process is finished you should see all installed drives after hitting the DISK/BROWSE button.

If the backlight of the display is not working you probably have to replace the backlight-foil.
Nevertheless you should see something on the display, regardless if the backlight is working or not.

If you cannot get the sampler working than the PSU has to be checked and repaired/replaced.

I do have something new. I lighted the screen with a handtorch and the backligt is faulty it seems because i can read some stuff now.
At boot up it says:

E-MU boot v0.5f
CHecking floppy...

Then this creen appears

Try to boot from Flash [ENTER], YES [EXIT] NO

if i click YES, the screen turn blank and nothing happens. If i click NO. it says BOOT FAILED.

That's a normal behaviour ? The sampler waiting for its OS on a floppy ?

I ordered a backlight , flashprep and OS4.62 floppys for Classic (since it normally have 2mb cpuflash) and now, i'm trying to make a boot floppy with files from here: http://francisfisher.me.uk/problem/2011 ... y-archive/

I putted EOS28CL.EXE from this website on a floppy using command prompt in XP. But still, it doesn't do anything at boot up when i insert the disk. It says it check the floppy but nothing happens.

Same screen as previously and the floppys seems keeping turning without end. To me the floppy drive is dead too...

The seller forgave to give me his O.S floppy and said he will ship it to me but i guess i have to find another floppy drive first now, i guess.

IMHO this EIV is faulty!

The EIV Range has the EOS on the CPU FLash Ram. It´s located on the Mainboard.

So, normally the EIV doesn´t need to boot from floppy!!!!

In your case the Flash seemed to be corrupted/damaged!!!!!

Last possibility is to get an EOS into the Flash via floppy.
If this failed....

CALL OFF THE DEAL!!!!!

I find a floppy drive in an old PC.
Put it in and the sampler and now the sampler can boot from flash with this drive installed.

I checked the voltage at floppy connector and i have 4.92v, that's fine but it means the original drive is dead. The "new" drive does not allow to save but i succeeded format a disk in the E-mu. Strangely enough as soon as you put a disk inside it keeps turning and turning.

So, good news but i wonder why the old drive does not allow to boot ?

In fact i discovered it is 40mb ram, 128 polyphony, 1mb CPuflash and EOS3.00b, effect card installed.
Sampler's configuration was not stated in the auction, thus, i asked by private message. In the end it is not what the seller told me. The good surprise is i have an effect card Inside.
I guess he don't have a clue of what he sold.

It is in good shape and i think i will keep it. I already ordered a new ELFOIL. But i can sell my 4.62 and Flashprep floppies now. :-/
I originally planned to fit a big SSD in this one (with 4.62, indeed) but now i search for a ZIP drive and ZIP disks, if anyone off you have that.

It was cheaper than those selling here. And i guess i can't be lucky 2 times in the same week.
I also bought a completely beated up SP12 on the cheap. I changed the battery, cleaned it, resolder some points. And she is up and running.
He sold it to me for Sp12 classic, but in fact it is a 12 Turbo with 5s sampling, for half price.

When I replaced my floppy with a removable HD bay I had to place a jumper across 2 pins on the FDD main board connector.
If I hadn't done this the OS would not boot. So if the sampler fails to see a FDD the operating system will hang whilst looking for it.

At best i may try other pins on the original floppy. Because the motor is still functionning...thanks for pointing this.

I find a documentation for Emu's pins settings for various floopy drives.

Have you considered an Iomega JAZ Drive instead of a zip?
1GB & 2GB size drives are available on ebay for about the same price as SCSI zip drives.
Lots more storage per disc & faster load/save times.
Some emu users hate them I cant fault them really

I guess so. Just so long as it fits and you have a scsi connector, just check the power requirments, I wouldn't imagine it would be any more than a HD.

As reliable as other magnetic media such as floppies and zips, but I would backup valuable data.
I have the 1GB external model as i find new blank discs easier to come by, although I seldom use it now.

I didn't seen many Jaz drive and discs in the end, i bought what i found on the cheapest possible, a ZIP 100.
Anyway for what i'll do with the sampler (lots of synthesis, drums) i know i don't need much, i don't use sample cds or librarys.

Well this sampler have some troubles with the buttons too, THAT double trigger on F1 is really annoying. I think i remember there is no hardware fix...will dig the forum now about that problem.

Seller don't ask to my messages and i started a paypal reclamation, asked all my money back since it costs to make it working.
Floppy drive + El foil+ zip equals the price i paid for the sampler.

The only solution for the bouncing issue of the buttons is replacement.
The bouncing is an effect of age and wear.

A work around is to use an old ASCII keyboard.
This is also very convenient for naming banks, presets and samples.

Oh they can be replaced, i didn't remember. I thought you needed to to change all the button board. Good news.

Yes true, the keyboard helps but i like my instruments as close as possible to their original state.

Replacement means unsoldering of the defective switch and solder in a new switch.
I replaced some switches at a Command Station.

You can get switches "Switch, tact momentary SPST without cap" (SKU: SW340) at eprelectronics for about US $2.09 for less, depending on the amount of switches you buy.
