New operating system problem

I have two E6400 ultras (not greedy, it was more cost effective to buy a second one 2nd hand than to buy extra outputs for the first...)
I have tried to install hard drives into both, an 80meg in one and a 120meg in the other..
The sampler with EOS 4.61 works with the HD and the other, with EOS 4.50 doesnt, it will save once and never again until I format it again....
I have been told that I need to upgrade the software (which I did have on disk - only can no longer find..)
I have tried downloading a newer EOS (4.7 from here) but cant get it to work - as far as I can remember all you had to do was put the disk in and boot it up? this doesnt worka nd neither does anything else I have tried.
any help would be much appreciated, and before you ask the studio is run from an atari so i cant load a new EOS straight from a PC (although I do have access to one to download onto a disk etc)
thanks!
Steve.
(Ps I have never got my RFX to work and I dont care, ?400 wasted but I cant be bothered with the hassle!)
