I recently acquired an Akai ME10D "MIDI Digital Delay" unit on eBay. It was part of a combo with an Akai ME30P MIDI Patchbay, which is what I was really after... seems like nobody is making MIDI patchbays anymore.

Anyway, here's my problem: I have no idea what use it might have. I mean, I sort of know what it does (delays passing on a MIDI note, can shift the transmitted note up or down one octave and shift the velocity), but I can't really think of any real use for it. Does anyone have any ideas?

(I need to find replacements for the two knobs on the front panel as well... does anybody know what the originals looked like?... as, purely from an aesthetic point of view, getting ones that matched would be keen)

I reckon you could probably use it to create arpeggios on the fly.

i had one, you cant sync it to midi. other than that its really cool.

Hmm... a MIDI delay that can't sync to MIDI... while I'm tempted to utter a loud "WTF??!?", perhaps the idea of syncing to MIDI clock was something they just didn't think of way back then (actually, not quite so loud an utterance, as I hadn't even thought about it myself until you mentioned it

As for on-the-fly arpeggios... there doesn't appear to be any facility for looping delayed MIDI passages (but that WOULD be pretty cool), it's just a one-time delay on each note sent. I do like being able to adjust the velocity manually (at least I think I can... I haven't gotten around to powering up the unit yet as I hadn't found a use for it and I'm short of rack space at the moment), as I'm still using an old CZ-101 as my "master" keyboard (no excuse, really, just every time I think to look for a replacement, I come across a sound module I want more... and I can't decide between just getting a vanilla controller with no sound and springing for a full synthesizer). Thing works fine for triggering loops and one-shot samples, but for actual playing it's about as exciting as salt. Velocity stuck on constant 64, no mod-wheel... but at least it's small, light, and portable.

alien_brain... so what sort of cool things could it be used for?

hmm. i didnt keep mine, just checked it out and then got hungry one day and sold it to the first guy i could find who would buy it. but it might be cool on some synths where you could use velocity as a modulation source for something cool like operator volume output or filter cutoff or morph, etc. what have you?
