Thought I'd share this!

I picked up a Yamaha DX7 on Ebay about a month and a half ago for... ?27 (about US$54).

OK, it's not exactly in pristine cosmetic condition but it's fully working and guess what, it has a very expensive memory upgrade (Sycologic V2) which I didn't know about, which gives 4 banks of 32 sounds (instead of a single bank), and it has 16 MIDI Out channels (the DX7 only transmits on Ch. 1 normally). It can send Program Change messages 0-127, whereas the the basic model only sends 0-31. No Local On/Off though. The only annoying thing with the Mark 1 DX7 keyboard is that it does not transmit velocities beyond 118 so beware if you're thinking of getting one to use as a MIDI controller.

I just love the DX sound; I also have a TX7 expander and once owned a DX7S, which I stupidly sold.

My Dx-7 mark 2 is one of my favourite synths:) It just got that sound.

I just picked up a second hand E4XT Ultra for 25ukp and 12ukp postage, it wasnt working, but I managed to get the psu replaced and now it is.

The thing about DX7, and other Yamaha synths, is that they're built like tanks and will last nearly forever. Part of the reason they're so inexpensive on the second-hand (or third-hand by this time... we'll just call it "the secondary market") is that they made a f**k-load of them and nearly all of them still work. Can't say the same for many other synths from 1983.

Although the DX7 is built like a tank, the one I bought for ?27 has a big hold in the left-hand side panel, a dent in the rear panel and several scratches.

It now needs a new battery. I'm going to go down the battery holder route to avoid unsoldering the battery and soldering a new one in in future.
