MONITORING HELP!!

hey, i got some general newbie confusion going on with monitoring.

it seems really confusing to me how to go about it...

say you get some studio monitors that you like the sound of. now they are slightly colored a certain way, as all monitors don't sound alike, right?
so now you mix with these, get things how you want, only to burn your tracks on CD, play them on your crappy home stereo to find it sounds completely different (b/c you're home stereo isn't $2000 monitors!). or you play it in your car and now it sounds another way b/c these speakers have their own charachteristics...then your friend's stereo sounds different too.!!!

see what i mean? i'm guessing it's less confusing then i'm making it, but i'm at a loss as what to shoot for...

any ideas/input?

Always monitor thru a lofi speaker as well!

It's all about compromise

Yeah, always take the time to listen with a highpass on, through headphoens, in the car (this is invaluable), go down to your local Electronics SuperMegaMart with a CD and play it on every boombox and system they have until they throw you out.

And if you can, play it on as many club systems as possible. See if you can throw yer CD on before the club opens or something. Very useful to see how tracks sound LOUD.

gotcha, thnx for the ideas
but after some reading, i'm gathering that it's just best to get the flatest possible monitors and mix with them to how you like it...then of course checking with all other types of systems afterwards.

basically, i guess i'm trying to figure out how nice of monitors are REALLY needed. and a sub? will i regreat monitors that are lower end? $300-$500?

i can't imagine monitoring in headphones for much longer, but i guess people do that too....
