i am rebuilding my computer. it has become obvious to me that i am just not going to get much more out of my computer; i can't find any software that will work with it anymore, it is too slow, and of course, the emulator x has requirements that are more then what my current computer can offer. as much as i hate to see that computer go, i have had it since i was like 17 or 18, i am 25 now, i guess it is time to say good bye.

so will my new system be up to snuff with what the emulator x will demand? what is your opinions on this.

i now have a gigabyte motherboard, dual bios, ddr ram capabilities and such. i am also running agp 8x standard on this thing.

i have purchased an amd athol 2800+ xp processor. appearantly this thing has a clock speed of 2.083 ghz. i think as of right now, my jumpers are set wrong, it is clocking in at 1.2 right now. i am going to have to work on this. also i still have windows 98 on this thing right now.

i also have 512 megs of ddr ram. i plan on getting another stick of ram soon. and i will be getting a new hd, and retire my old hd for my emu.

i also upgraded my video card to support that resolution that is said to be needed for this thing to run.

i have windows xp upgrade, so i can go from 98 to xp, but i have some concerns about this. i don't understand why it is a hundred dollars cheaper then the full version. also concerned if it will work. i have already posted this on doa, and i have already received some responses. but any additional would be great here as well. i will also send off to get the sp1a patch for xp so that damn emulator thing will run. this whole activation thing is creepy too. at some point in the future, i can see windows xp being a dead software. with this new anti pirating software technology, i see people that still use it after microsoft either collapses as a company or moves on to something else, have to format there computers every month just to keep the damn thing from preventing boot up. what a stupid idea.

i plan on getting the emulator x studio in the next couple of weeks so i want to know what your guy's opinion is on this system that i spent the weekend creating. do you think it will work proper. i haven't had to deal with up grading my kit for a long, long time, so my ability to guess isn't as sharp as it use to be.

here is emu's requirements for the studio x directly from there site:

Genuine Intel? Pentium? III or AMD? K6? class processor or higher operating at 1.5GHz or faster (Pentium? 4 at 2.4GHz or faster recommended)

one thing i can't understand is all these sites refer to amd processors as k6 or k7, but on amd's site, they don't have any such thing listed. i guess, i have heard that the k6 is an athlon, but whatever. i also don't understand the system ram line on this as well. what does it me 1ghz or better?

anyway tell me what you guys think. do you think i am in the clear?

Well .. Here I go:

It's always hard to ask users if a system is 'good enough' as the answers you'll get will be as different as the number of people responding :-)

I have build many, MANY PCs for music in my time and I have found that Intel processors running on an Intel chipset seems to work the best. There are 'a lot' of problems with VIA chipsets in particular.

Not that there's anything wrong with an AMD processor but try to avoid the VIA chipsets as there seems to be a lot of incompatibilities with these chipsets and several audiocards and / or videocards.

I think (and hope) that your current setup will work perfectly with the Emulator X system but keep in mind that you might eventually want to upgrade to another system that just may not work with the VIA chipset.

Sounds like your FSB is set wrong. Had the same problem recently. Think it is the cpu external frequency. This should be set to exactly half the value of the front side bus (FSB). Make sure that you read the Motherboard manual before doing anything though.

As for your original questions it should be fine

get XP asap, 98 sux on any newer chip i reckon... XP is blazin, 100mb or so of new drivers etc updates to dwnload but woth it..


gt the emu x too, just get it if u havnt gt a hardware version.
