Emu owners who operate on the Mac...

For those who are using the emu and who are mac based. Have any of you upgraded to the new core duo macs? Since Emu dosen't support the hardware samplers, I wonder should I stick with my current G4 machine or upgrade. Have anyone had any sucess or is it better to just keep what I have.

I would wait another 6 months, we need more Universal Binary Apps to run Native first. Toast, Cubase, Pro Tools and DSP Quattro should be Universal soon no more than 6 months anyways.

What OS and apps do you currently use on the Mac for the EMU?

The addition of the emu should release some of your mac mini cpu power if you were previously using soft synthesis/sampling. So (theoretically) you should need a less powerful computer now than you did last week! I recommend you squeeze every bit of creative power out of your emu before you start feeling you need a better computer. Now if I could only just learn to practise what I preach....

Hi,

I've been reading the posts throughout the forum regarding the use of sample transfer via scsi.

In my experience so far, I'm find the whole thing a problem.

I have an adaptec 2910N and I've been trying to send samples via Peak 4.1.3 but I just can't even get started.

I go to the menu bar, click on SAMPLER --> EMU SAMPLER and then it says "No SMDI Processers were found connected to this macintosh".

My mac is a G5 running 10.3.9

After reading through the posts, it seems that the ATTO U3S card is working. So maybe the problem is with my SCSI PCI card.

If you have a running system, then I'd be thankful and leave it there until someone can confirm a working mac setup. I have my fingers crossed that Zuoinics ZoEOS will be able to do the job.

Speaking of which, has anyone got sample transfer working in a G5 OS 10.3?

Cheers,

Andy

I should add, my mac is a G5, single processor.

Hi

This is Paul @Zuonics. I'm currently trying to establish what the situation is with SCSI on Mac OS X. I can tell you that Adaptec ceased supporting their cards on OS X as of version 10.2.x. i.e there are no official drivers for 10.3.x nor 10.4.x. That may be the reason you are not getting your Adaptec card to work. From what I can tell so far, the Atto cards UL3S/UL3D and above have fully supported drivers for OS X all the way up to Tiger, 10.4.x.

The USB2SCSI and FireWire2SCSI devices form Ratoc seem to be no goers, but if anyone out there can correct me on that please speak up at this forum.

While the Atto cards seem like a dependable bet, they are seriously expensive. I think the Atto UL3D is like 180GBP from MacWarehouse - that's nearly 300EUR!

Hi, the following is a list of kernel extensions (drivers) for SCSI cards from a 10.4 install.
Yes Adaptec DID stop support of drivers, Apple do the drivers now.

ACard62xxM.kext
ACard68xxM.kext
ACard671xSCSI.kext
ACard6885M.kext
ACard67162.kext
Adaptec78XXSCSI.kext
Adaptec290X-2930.kext
Adaptec29160x.kext
Adaptec39160.kext
ATTOExpressPCIPlus.kext
LSIUltra320.kext

Im not familiar with the 2910N in fact i've never heard of such a product model. You should check this again. The 'N' in this model number concerns me. This suggests the card is a Narrow 8bit wide card 5-20meg/sec PCI 2.1card. The other issue here is the G5's never had PCI 2.1 slots. The first G5's shipped with PCI rev2.6 64bit 66mhz slots, PCI-X slots and now current machines with PCI-express. There has not yet been manufactured, afaik a narrow 8bit wide SCSI card and as such these cards cannot be used in a PCI rev 2.6 64bit/66mhz slot.

To check to see if the OS has actually scanned your SCSI card and provided its services from the kernel extension you should first

Go to the Apple menu
About This Mac
Click the More Info Button in the About This Mac dialog box
System Profiler Launches-In the left column locate and select SCSI- the right hand pane will either provide information about the hardware or display "No Information Found'.

If it is the latter id investigate further information about this card. If there is no info here the OS cannot provide the SCSI card to any other application. If there is SCSI info you could copy/paste that info here. In addition, you should look at other areas, such as in your EMU's master page Host Mac on SCSI ID 7 function ON. Also you may want to check DSP Quattro. This app provides SCSI communication with samplers, its actually designed better than Peak. I used to use it 10+ years ago when it was DSound Pro on my old pre OSX Mac's. I haven't tested DSP Quattro with SCSi but it still provides the communication. You could email the guy and ask him the status of SCSI in it. He will reply, he's an Italian guy and always been really cool with me (helpful).

I know without doubt the ATTO cards DO work, and BIAS Inc confirmed this. Horrendously expensive option i know.

Im sure ratty has success with the USB2SCSI option search for this user. Problem with those devices if they do not allow daisy chaining. Ive had many emails with the engineers with Ratoc about this issue.

zuonics dude- the UL3D is a Dual channel card look for a UL3S (single channel) of course cheaper. The problem for us with these cards is
A) the require LVD Teflon internal cables (expensive) or gold plated shielded external cables
B) Expensive terminators

Maybe another option is a PCI 64bit or PCI-X or PCI-E (depending on model G5) -> CardBus Card. Basically a PCI card that slots in to the machine, the back plate accepts a CardBus (PCMCIA) then you could plug in a Ratoc UltraSCSI CardBus card which i know first hand that works.

Im sure there is much more to write about but im sure this lot helps.

just confirmed the following about DSP Quattro 2.1 read Me

SCSI dumps are now fully compatible with the MacOS X IOKit for 10.3 or newer compatibility (Roland S760 SCSI dumps are supported on MacOS 8/9 ONLY)

The reason this is mention is because there was a period where Mac OS X 10.2.8+ completely destroyed everything SCSI in the audio world. Apple removed and designed new API's and implemented them in 10.2.8 -10.3+. All SCSI apps were not able to function when the OS was updated to 10.2.8+. SCSI apps needed to be re-written to take advantage of the 10.3 I/O SCSI kit. This was a HUGE nightmare for me for over 6 months. At the time BIAS Inc alleged they didn't know about the API deprecation, yet Apple told me they told all developers about the change at the WWDC a year prior. Anywayz its all sorted out now, BIAS updated Peak with the new API starting 4.1.1 and now DSP Quattro 2.1+

This is mostly irrelevant to most ppl now.

Hi everyone,

Here's an update of my SCSI situation.

I found this information:

"The Adaptec PowerDomain 29160N (APD-29160N), PowerDomain 29160 (APD-29160) and PowerDomain 39160 (APD-39160) are Universally keyed and will fit into either 5 V or 3.3 V PCI slots, so these cards will fit into PCI or PCI-X slot but have only been tested minimally in the Power Mac G5 and not at all in the Xserve G5. No new issues have been seen with the Power Mac G5."

From

http://ask.adaptec.com/cgi-bin/adaptec_ ... faqid=8185

I bought the 29160N, put it into the Mac G5 and then ran a sample transfer via Peak. The answer to my SCSI communication problems were due to the order I switched on my Mac and Sampler. It needs to be Sampler first, then Mac, then external hard drives and cdrom. I then mount everything in the sampler. Works a treat and I'm very impressed. I've been using this set-up now for months without there every being any problems.

You can find the card cheap on ebay. I've seen it under ?10.

FWIW....

I have an Adaptec Powerdomain 39160 that I used in my Dual 800 G4 for years (in OS 9 without problems). As soon as I upgraded to OS X (10.3.9), the card caused kernal panics. I thought I was going to have to purchase a new SCSI card......

I picked up a Dual 2.0 G5 (Early 2005 model) with standard PCI slots and the 39160 works flawlessly with my e6400 Ultra, using Peak for my SMIDI transfers. I am running Mac OS 10.4.7 and have a UAD-1 and MOTU PCI-424 card installed in the machine.

Hope this info helps someone.

i am using pretty much the same setup (g5 dp 2.5 on 10.3.9, emu esynth, adaptec 29160N), and i havent managed to get the smdi transfer from mac to emu working properly. the 29160n shows up in system profiler in the pci heading, but under the "scsi" heading there is "no information" - nothing.... i have tried setting up a chain (mac to zip 250 drive to emu), and goin straight from mac to emu, and ive had no joy whatsoever. i am new to all of this, so hopefully theres something i missed, and i will get it working sometime in the near future..... but for now i want to throw this adaptec card out of the window...
has anyone else actually used this usb to scsi convertor that that guy big clap has posted about? maybe this will solve my prob...

Any news about all this? I bought the PowerDomain 29160N a while ago, and although it is installed in my dual G4 running OSX 10.5 without any problem, I haven't tried it with my E6400 yet, simply because I need to purchase the right cable? Gonna do it soon and will keep you updated with my attemps and/or results?
