Well, I'm here looking at my new Emu and I want to replace the floppy internal drive with an internal zip drive. Is this possible? Have anyone done this before with good results? If so, any links on information that I would need to do this myself?

I'm about to install a removable scsi drive (not zip but similar) into mine.

I've also been trying to get a IDE > CF adapter to work so I've been messing about inside my emu quite a bit.

My observations:

EMU doesnt appear to support ATAPI so zip drive has to be scsi (shame, I fancied a 750 zip and it seems difficult to find even a 250 scsi internal).

power connections on emu board are reversed so prepare any cables carefully or buy the hard drive kit.

pre 4.7 oses wont boot without floppy so use 4.7 or cannibalise a floppy, bag the electronics in something robust and non conductive, connect and secure inside (gaffer tape?). If you have to go pre 4.7 you'll probably need to make a splitter cable to power both your zip and floppy, presuming theres a hard drive in there already.

Although I think you'll be okay I feel I have to warn you that the PSUs in some emus are weak and expensive! You should check that the total power drainage wont push your emu too far - I very much doubt it will but I don't want to feel responsible for killing your new toy, others here may advise on this.

Correct me if I'm wrong people...

final note:

external scsi 250s seem to be easy to come by so if you can tolerate the extra clutter it might be more convenient overall. Mine looks a little antiquated next to my mac mini and audiophile but I guess I could always paint it silver!

Reading your first reply, I may just go w/ an external scsi zip. Though aren't there compatibility issues or will any zip do?

Not aware of any compatibility issues with scsi external zips. I use one I bought for my computer years ago when design agencies sent everything out on them, just plugged it in and there it was. The 250mb version seems readily available (ebay or even freecycle if illinformed's post is anything to go by) in external scsi so its probably the one to go for.
