Right now I have my computer sending midi through to my e4's midi a input. I have a midi controller that I want to use to tweak midi parameters within the e4. If I hook up the controller to midi b input, all my channels are bumped up 16 units. So if I am transmitting from the controller on channel 1, it's actually 17. The manual says this is normal operation but I want to control a channel that is being controlled by my computer, i.e channel 3.

So my question is how do I get input on midi b input to control channels 1 through 16?

My emu is an e4 platinum with the midi expander.

i'm guessing you don't? i don't think there's a way to switch between controlling 17-32, 1-16, or any combination. seems the second port is for if you need access to more than 16 internal channels.

Hi there! I do not believe this is a problem, you just have to do some fiddeling. I am guessing you are wanting to use the midigear connected to midi b to control for example filter cutoff on a preset on channel 1? If so I believe you can just switch your emu to "whole", and it will not care what channel you are transmitting on. If that is not what you need, maybe you can just do something like this computer midiout-tweakbox midi thru tweakbox midiout-emu midiin. Or something like that.

Typically with a sequencer setup you would plug the keys into the computer and then one or two midi outs from the computer to the sampler for a total of 16 or 32 sequencable midi channels. Then choose which channel by choosing a track in the sequencer. I'm not sure (because the above is how I work) but I think you can set up your sequencer so you can use your keyboards chosen midi channel (you keyboard should be able to choose which channel it sends on) or use midi yoke or the like to route your keys straight to the sampler (bypass the sequencer).

Alternatively if you never use more than 16 channels you could just duplicate the presets on 1-16 to 17-32 and plug into midi b. But that wouldn't let you effect the sequenced sound.

Replace the word keyboard with control surface etc if thats what your midi controller is.

I'm intrigued now. Do you want to use midi b because you are deliberately trying to bypass your sequencer or because you are short a midi in into your computer?

Well here's the setup:

I'm using cubase sx, it can program tracks for channels 1 through 16. The sequencer is sending midi notes to trigger samples on the emu.

I also have a evolution uc 33e midi control surface that is just an array of sliders and knobs. I want to use this to control cc values so I can tweak destinations on the emu. I want to use this as opposed to drawing out controller lanes in cubase sx because it's a lot more fun. Unfortunately this device does not have a midi thru and I cannot put it in my midi chain.

Here's my options: I need to get midi b to work on channels 1 - 16 or I need a midi device that takes multiple midi ins and combine them to one thru so I can have one midi chain.

the UC-33e should (?) actually have a midi out/thru port, no? it should output anything that's coming in, along with whatever CCs that it's sending out itself. does it not work like this?

EDIT: ehh, i guess not. might be possible if you're using USB on it as well, but not as convenient. the BCR/F-2000 can do just what you need though. not sure what other controllers.

The device I use to combine midi device output into one is my computer.

In your situation I would connect the UC 33 midi out to a midi in on my computer (or usb if it has it) then use that as a midi source in Cubase, then run my sequence and select the track I wanted to work with and tweak away. Let me know if there is something I'm missing.

Alternatively if you dont want to record automation data you could use midi yoke/midi ox to route your pc midi in (UC 33) directly to your pc midi out in addition to your sequencer i.e. both the sequencer and uc 33 output will be combined at the pc midi out.

Aha I think I might have finally got it, your PC has no midi outs bar the ones on the the UC-33e and they only out put the UC -33 midi?? Nope that doesn't make sense either as you wouldn't be able to send sequencer data at all... hmmm

I'm guessing you have the UC-33e with it's USB in/out and midi in and out PLUS another pc device (audio card/interface?) that gives you a midi out that you have connected to your EMU?
