emusonacid! legacy

Hi all I'm hoping somebody can help with this issue. I have 'successfully' connected my ESynth Ultra to my Sony laptop (using a cardbus 1480A if anybody is interested) and happily passed samples via SMDI using Soundforge - so far so good.
The problem is my Yamaha cd-r in the scsi chain. The CD-r is seen and shows up on the EMU but I can't load any EMU CD's. It often shows 'invalid directory' but even on the odd occasion when the correct folder is displayed I get 'no disk in drive' or 'invalid format' when I try to load or save to HD. I could have a faulty drive of course (ebay) but wondered if there is anything obvious I'm missing. I originally tried the CD rom direct to the EMU before I set up the PC but it was exactly the same. In a nutshell, can see the drive - doesn't see the content.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Does yoour CD drive have a different SCSI ID to both the computer and the sampler. Have you tried toggling the SCSI termination on the CD drive (if it's in the middle of the chain, it should be off).

yep -tried that. Termination is off (and tried on and off when it was just the cd connected). Tried a few different id's. The perplexing thing is that the yamaha drive 'show's up' in the emu menu's and occasionally the folder on the cd shows up by name.

I think I read somewhere on the forum that Yamaha cd drives were causing problems with E-mu samplers. E-mu's are very picky when it comes to memory expansion and storage. Back then my Esi-32 had a compatibility list. Maybe the same exists for EOS samplers. Search on www.emu.com

Hi - cheers again for all the help. Regarding the compatabiity list: I'm not sure that is much help anymore. Sure you know what to look for on ebay in terms of Xyz will definitiely work but that list is ancient so there are probably loads of drives that work that won't be on the list. I suppose what I mean is, the lack of yamaha drives included on the list won't necessarily mean they've been tested and proved as incompatible. Having said that, it leads me to suspect that yammie and EMU aren't best buddies so I may try and source a toshiba or something.
Finally, does the drive showing up indicate anything? Would the EMU see all drives (compatible or not) and have interface problems only when loading etc or does the fact that the EMU sees the Yamaha CD-R give hope??

Ok - I think the CD-rom drive is dodgy (yamaha) as it doesn't work properly with my Roland S-760 either. I have ZIP and JAZ drive I can use but I'm having problems getting the data off the CD's as my PC can't read them.
DO I need CDXtract ot translator just to copy onto a ZIP? I don't need to translate just see and copy in the same format and wondered if there was a simpler and cheaper prog (Win XP) to do this. If I have to go down the translator or CDXtract road which is best - I'm thinking CDXtract.
