Some questions about the emu 6400 classic

Hi everyone, i just found a used emu e6400 classic for 250 euros and was thinking to buy it . I already own the emu-x 2.0 and always wanted to upgrade to the hardware version so i tought this could be the right occasion.
The sampler comes with 72 mb of ram, 1mb cpu flash, 1mb cpu ram, digital i/o card, 4 gig scsi harddisk, scsi cd player and eos 3.0b installed.
i allready did some search thru the forum and found out that i cannot install version 4.x of the eos since i only have 1mb of cpu ram but i still cant find some info about the differences between versions 3 and 4.
Anyway..keep in mind that i would use the sampler just for basslines/synths, so the 64 voice poliphony limit wouldnt be an issue.
I'm just a bit afraid of some possibile midi timing issues cause i read around that the classic series are not midi rock solid .is this true or just some rumours ? or maybe its more a sequencer problem rather than the sampler itself ? (i use ableton live as the main seq anyway)
And also i'd like to buy some kind of line preamp to use it before going into the soundcard (i have the emu1820m) ..was thinking about the aphex 207..do u think it is worth or its just not necessary ? or maybe do u know some better (and possibly cheap) hardware unit ?
Any other suggestions/tips or advice about anything will be very appreciated...cheers
Luca
