Some questions about the emu 6400 classic

Postby signal.flow » Tue May 13, 2008 11:03 am

Hi everyone, i just found a used emu e6400 classic for 250 euros and was thinking to buy it . I already own the emu-x 2.0 and always wanted to upgrade to the hardware version so i tought this could be the right occasion.
The sampler comes with 72 mb of ram, 1mb cpu flash, 1mb cpu ram, digital i/o card, 4 gig scsi harddisk, scsi cd player and eos 3.0b installed.
i allready did some search thru the forum and found out that i cannot install version 4.x of the eos since i only have 1mb of cpu ram but i still cant find some info about the differences between versions 3 and 4.
Anyway..keep in mind that i would use the sampler just for basslines/synths, so the 64 voice poliphony limit wouldnt be an issue.
I'm just a bit afraid of some possibile midi timing issues cause i read around that the classic series are not midi rock solid .is this true or just some rumours ? or maybe its more a sequencer problem rather than the sampler itself ? (i use ableton live as the main seq anyway)
And also i'd like to buy some kind of line preamp to use it before going into the soundcard (i have the emu1820m) ..was thinking about the aphex 207..do u think it is worth or its just not necessary ? or maybe do u know some better (and possibly cheap) hardware unit ?

Any other suggestions/tips or advice about anything will be very appreciated...cheers

Luca

I've used and owned a couple of classics. One with v.3 and another with v.4 software. I wouldn't really worry to much about timing tbh, especially if you're using it for basses and synth sounds which is what I use them for. It won't playback with sample accuracy for example like Kontakt/E-mulator X but then no hardware will. I've never noticed any problems in approx 10 years.

250 euros is quite expensive for an E6400, I wouldn't pay much over 125, imo I'd be looking for an E6400 Ultra for that sort of amount. Also if you're planning on using it for basses/synth sounds then I would strongly consider an Ultra which will allow you to run EOS 4.7 (giving you realtime control over resonance via midi cc). Very nice on synth sounds and basses imo.

thanks a lot for the info...you got me reconsidering the purchase..eheh..since res automation its something i do very often.
about the price..well i knew it wasnt the best offer around but since the dude who sells it lives in my town i was ok with it cause i could see it and try it before buying, so no worries about shipping etc
and honestly i'm not sure i could find an ultra fully loaded with optionals for 250...at least here in italy
well..i guess i'll wait and look for a better offer around..or maybe i might ask the guy to lower price

again..thanks for the infos
