Zip file formats

Hey Guys,
Hoping one of y'all can help me out. I'm trying to get samples from my imac into my E5000 with no joy. I bought a usb to scsi adapter but it only worked once. Has crashed my machine every other time! So I've given up on it. What I want to know is, if I get a cheap usb zip250 can I save samples onto that and then pop the disk in my Emu's zip scsi? I appreciate not as cool as scsi transfer but for hassle free life I'm willing to accept it. Maybe need an Eos upgrade for this to work?? Any help appreciated.

cheers,
Gylen

If you are using OS 4.70 (which can read DOS formatted disks), I think you can do this - hopefully someone else can confirm?

well the thing with upgrading is, even if he does, his emu will not be able to read the discs. 4.7 does allow fat, but, a macintosh is not a pc, and therefor does not use the same memory managment as a pc would.

i would say, get your samples. save them or rename them as wav and then you should be able to put that zip into your emu and access, i would however not recommend formating the zip from your imac as that might make your emu unable to read it. only issue is that the mac might now be able to save it to the zip because it wont know how to arrange the data on the disc.

i would suggest trying it out first, take your zip out of your scsi, use that adaptor if you can to get the zip hooked up to your mac, then save something to a blank disc, then hook th zip back up to your sampler and see if it can see the info on the disc, if it does, go get a usb zip and have at it. should work... but never know. i don't deal with macintosh all that much...

perhaps this will at least give you an idea on how to proceed.

Thanks for the responses. I wondered about the mac file issues myself...The problem is this damn scsi adapter not working. It won't even let me hook the zip up or anything else (just crashes the mac on startup). Reckon I might have to bite the bullet ang buy another more reliable one. Anyone got any recommendations? I wish I could just use a pci card but that's what you get for buying an imac i suppose.

It's one I'm thinking of buying. So with USBXchange, I should be able to connect my E-Mu to the PC, and transfer samples with a program like Sound Forge?

hhhhmmm, now I'm stumped. I've installed EOS 4.7 which should read FAT formatted drives. I've borrowed a usb zip drive and filled the disk up wit samples. Then, I put the disk in the EMU's SCSI drive, it sees it as a FAT disk, the browser lets me see my samples but when I try and load all I get is it failing and saying 'Unknown Error'!! BTW, I used Iomegaware to format it as a dos disk. Anyone got any ideas cos right now a nice new MPC1000 with drag and drop usb is looking mighty appealing.

Had the Zip disk been formatted to FAT by the Emu?

Thanks, I've tried formatting it on the emu and using iomegaware. I don't know what it is. It starts to load the sample and then...unknown error. Absolutely no idea why. The sample are definately .wav not .aiff so I have no idea. Anyone??

weird,
After messing about all week, it seems that the emu doesn't like to read anything with a long filename or numbers in it off my zip. But, I have had some sucess. Only problem is, it will only read sample on the zip as whole banks, not samples. Any ideas???
cheers,

too bad EMU doesnt come out with a usb or firewire expansion for transfers. that would be the best thing i could imagine for EMU's but it doesnt seem likely.
