Hi, I was wondering if anyone could recommend some decent audio cables to connect my e6400ultra (four lots of stereo outs) to my mixing desk? At the moment I've just got the main outs connected with a decent quality Cordial guitar cable (around 25 quid)... neutrik ends etc...

My problem is why do I have to pull the jack plug... halfway out of the mixer to get a stereo signal going into the desk? When the jack is inserted fully, I get no signal unless I pull out one of the jacks on the stereo out from my sampler... I realise this is a totally newbie question, but I've just moved from an entirely software based environment into a hardware one, and I can't get my head around audio cables and how they function... At the moment, I can't pan sounds using the sampler, and having to have the jackplug halfway out of the desk can be annoying if they get nudged and I'm wondering why there's no sound from that channel...

Sounds a bit strange. maybe you are plugged into an insert and not an audio in....
Sorry if that sound condescending it's not meant to be but the same thing happens to me, though only when I use an insert, on my mixer. mackie 32-8 and mackie cfx16
Are you using a TRS plug or a TS plug....
what kind of mixer is it?

Emu samplers use all balanced outputs I am sure.
You can use balanced cables. very easy to DIY high quality ones. just google how to do it.
always make your own unless time is an issue. cheaper, high quality, Cut to the perfect length,
easy to repair and you will save a small fortune in the long run.

Okay, so it seems like I was using a Y-adapter cable (insert cable?) to connect up my main outputs, and clearly don't know what I'm doing... *blushes

So I want to connect up my main outs, and 3 Sub outs to line in channels on my mixing desk... These are 1/4 inch jack, balanced, and stereo (left and right) Do I need 2 cables for each output, one for L and one for R? Surely I can just have the main outs and subs to go to 4 channels on my mixing desk, rather than taking up 8? I only have two channels on my mixing desk, a soundcraft mfx20/2...

I honestly don't know how to tell what a balanced cable looks like, is it the same as Tip Ring Sleeve? TRS..

Really need help, I've recently moved into a hardware environment from using software and don't know a fucking thing when it comes to audio cables...

I don't really want to start making my own audio cables just yet, I just want to start getting to grips with my sampler? I've been replacing most of my cables with expensive cordial cables, but they don't seem to make the ones I think I need for my e6400... also what's an interconnect? Is that just terminology referring to hi-fis?

Sounds like your in the insert channel... This is just a bridge that goes across the input of the desk, sending the signal to a patchbay which then immediately sends it back unless something is plugged in the front... These get used for noise gates and compressors etc. Not effects. They are a y shaped cable with the slever of the stereo connection being the earth and the tip th send to the patchbay and the ring the return to the desk. If you connect all these to a patchbay you can use it as a input on the front of your patchbay.
