E6400 in same rack as DAW PC

Postby sturoc » Mon Feb 21, 2011 3:11 am

Anyone have any thoughts on this.
I am re organizing my workstation area with new tabletop rack set up
and two stacked racks on casters.

Am thinking to have a dedicated E6400 linked sample PC tower underneath the table.
My DAW PC will be in one of the stacked racks
This may be neccesary due to layout considerations:
If I have one of the EMU's ( I have several) in the same rack as the DAW PC within 1 or 2 spaces of it
Would there be any noise or interference issues ?

I doubt you will get noise / interference issues, especially if you run analog in and out as balanced.
I would watch for heat issues though

Will have a good rack fan running in addition to the internal PC fans and not stack the units on top of each other.

I would be cautious about leaving a gap between your DAW and EMU , in racks the airflow tends to be from the front of the device out the back, if there is any gap between the devices the air thats traveling out of the DAW and emu will mushroom out and fill in the gap creating a hot spot. If you do have a gap i would recommend putting in a blanking plate to restrict the airflow through the gap and that should keep you out of trouble.
It all depends on how hot everything gets , It may be wise to take some ambient temperature readings off your DAW before you re-rack and see how it changes once re-racked.
I know its bizarre leaving a gap between the kit you would think it would make everything cooler but i have actually seen issues with kit running at 100% overheating because of the gap and after a very expensive re-rack the problems go.
