ESI-4000 CF install/jogwheel repair help?

Postby Stevno » Tue Feb 21, 2012 12:22 am

Hello all.

I own an ESI-4000 which I bought in the late nineties, and only used it for a few years before I lost interest in making music.
Now my interest has resurfaced and I plan to dust it off and put it back to work.

I'm very interested in installing an internal CF reader/writer as I never want to deal with floppies again.

Can anyone provide or point me to some info as to how to go about this?
Would I be able to load/save to CF on the sampler as well as writing to CF on my PC then loading it on the sampler?
Could I even connect the sampler to my PC and dump samples on to the ESI without the need for internal storage?

I am totally lost and don't know where to start, would someone be kind enough to spell it out for me?
I originally used an Atari ST with Cubase so have zero experience with PCs & audio gear!

The jog wheel doesn't work properly as well, I seem to remember it registering 1 in 10 clicks, do you know how I'd go about repairing/replacing this, or could I control the sampler entirely from the PC somehow?

Cheers, Stevie

For now - regarding the wheel-thingy- I can only advice you to contact EPR, they seem to have the Data Encoder

http://www.eprelectronics.com/store/E-mu-Rack-Mount-Modules-PARTS/E-mu-ESI-Sampler-series-c29/

But if you read the description "...requires a skilled technician with the appropriate desoldering/soldering tools to safely remove the old part (without damaging the pcb), and install the new part."

meaning that'll extent what the sampler is worth today, if you can't do it by yourself, or a skilled friend.

Rather than pay $15 for a new data encoder plus a whopping $38.95 postage, I found that two capacitors might be all that's needed thanks to this fix :

Has anyone tried this?

I'll definitely attempt this before splashing out on a new encoder, fingers crossed.

Joerg's solution is just working for some time.
I used it by myself. But after a while the whole thing starts again.
The contacts of the encoder are worn out and it gets worser the more you use the encoder.

The only solution is to replace the encoder.
I used a Bourns ECW0D-C24-BC0024.
Depending on the country you are living in, you can get it from a local or national supplier or from mouser.com, digikey.com, rs-online.com, farnell.com or in Germany from Reichelt or Conrad.

Many thanks mosrob :)

Can't find that exact part number but the 'ECW1D-B24-BC0024L' and 'ECW1J-B24-BC0024L' are available which seem close to what you suggested.

Any idea if either of these would work in my ESI-4000?
