emusonacid! legacy

I'm looking at grabbing an emu to colour my samples a bit and have heard particularly good things about the e64 and classic e6400
But I've seen some ESI 4000s going for peanuts and was hoping someone could give me an idea of how they compare? I don't care about the interface / functionality, only about the character of the sound. Any opinions appreciated!
