Hi!
One of my machines has a fault. As soon as I power up it freezes with a 'debugging' message. Anybody else experienced this? I've not been able to boot from floppy or do anything, so it sounds like it could be terminal. :cry:

If I could pinpoint the problem I do have another machine that I could hijack parts from so hopefully I can salvage something.

I think I have narrowed it down to being an issue with the FLASH ROM chip, but the bad news is I cannot locate it! Anybody know where it should be? In the rack version it's right up front, cant miss it, but the keys version has a completely different layout.

Thanks, but I'm under the impression that E4K and E-Synth keys have built in Flash memory.
Anyway, I have sent my unit of for repair, hope to have a result soon.

Yeah, the main boards for the keys (E4K, E-Synth Keys) had the CPU Flash mounted right on the board, rather than socketed. They needed to be sent back to the factory (or an approved E-mu service site... or whatever) in order to upgrade the CPU Flash.

Actually, I think they needed factory returns for a bunch of the upgrades, as the form factor and main board design made it extremely non-trivial to mount extra bits inside. With the rack units, they had plenty of space to play with inside, so things are mounted in a fairly standard way (well, "fairly standard" if you're familiar with the insides of a PC).

Anyway, hope your repair guy gets it sorted for you...

Indeed, for keyboards it was either a E-mu factory or authorized service center install, and even if you had the chips (which are no more available), it ?s a thing that?s only for the very experienced (pro) guys (delicate soldering joint), I read you can damage the whole unit if you fail. Techtone, I hardly doubt your module (Chips) work for E4k and E-Synth k as you claim. Even if you?d take the chips from it, I think they were of different size then these for the rack-models, hmm yours may be larger then on original E-mu modules, so they fit (?). You have PROVE these chips work for keyboard-models if taken out ? Otherwise I suggest not any longer claiming something that MIGHT BE / IS SIMPLY WRONG, and erase keyboard models from your compability-list in your auctions.

I have an emu e4x and Im trying to upgrade the OS> If it has to be sent to a approved emu service site to get upgraded, can anybody lead me in the correct direction as to where I can send it? Thanks!

Providing it has sufficient ROM then you should be able to download the upgrade to floppy disk and carry out the upgrade yourself. There are many threads on the subject that will assist you if you have difficulties.

Oops, just read your post in the other thread. If Techtone or eBay cant help you it may be worth trying The Synth Center in London.

Which "London" would that be? We've got one here in Canada as well (in the province of Ontario... it's about a 3 hour drive from where I am... assuming you take "speed limit" in the same level as "recommended reading", ie: not at all)

London, England... would be a long way to go from Montreal.
London, Ontario... wouldn't be nearly as far. Barely even a long distance call.
