I got my RFX today (!) but there's a notice inside that emus with older power supplies (before 9/01, like mine) may not be able to handle the extra power draw. I can take it to a shop for a PSU upgrade next week, but will using my sampler with the RFX over the weekend cause my shit to blow up, or what?

Anyone know?

(Damn, this RFX looks like it's gonna be dope!)

so i would have to get a new power supply if i get the rfx card?!?!?!

well, there just is no end to the madness...

well, i will show them, i will wait until my power supply dies, if it does, and then get that along with the rfx card, and who knows maybe by then it will be 500 dollars. :grin:

That depends on when your sampler was manufactured. If your serial number starts with 0901 (Sept of 2001) or later, you won't need the new PS, apparently.

According to E-mu technical support older E4 Ultras may work with the RFX-32 card. My e5000 has a serial number well before the listed date in the RFX manual, which led me to believe that I would need my power supply upgraded. After talking to E-mu I was informed that this may not be the case. So I installed my RFX-32 effects card, the RFX-32 8 Out and the RFX-32 4 Input upgrades as well as an internal IDE hard drive with no problems. The E-mu technical support dude told me that if the power supply can't handle the amount of hardware installed the e5000 wouldn't boot up at all. My e5000 is fine without the power supply upgrade and yours may be as well. The upgrade is free anyhow so I guess it is all good either way. :slayer:

well u run the risk of blowing the backlite tube for the LCD, in addition to frying the power supply or the logic board. The problem is, those earlier Ultras came with a power supply that can't draw enuff power for RFX if it was installed its simple as that. Dont risk it .

I probably (read: absolutely positively) should have waited, but I didn't :roll:

But, everything went okay, so it's all good... for me. If anybody else out there is thinking about being a dumbass like me and just taking the chance - DON'T. Yes it worked out okay for me, but thinking about it after the fact, there's no need to risk destroying your machine because you don't want to wait a few days to get it upgraded. I literally woke up in the middle of the night the next night thinking what a stupid thing to do that was :mrgreen:
