How to connect CD Drive to EMU Ultra?

Postby Dark Syndicate » Tue Sep 04, 2007 4:36 pm

Sorry if this is a dumb question...

Ive got a SCSI PCI card and CD Drive with my EMU, unfortunately i dont have any spare PCI slots in my computer.

but i thought i'd still be able to connect the CD drive??? Its just that the SCSI cable i got doesnt match the CD Drive.

So do i just need a different cable?

or can the CD Drive only be connected via the PC? (hope not  )

only 3 PCI slots and they are used for my Audio interface, Network card for internet and TC Powercore... i cant live without any of these :???:

You will probably just need a different cable. They're quite hard to track down new (not to mention identify which one you need - can you post pics of your SCSI ports so we can help you with that?). They're all over the place on ebay (and I probably have one in my loft), if you can ID the SCSI connector type.

Thanks for the reply

Heres a picture of the back of the drive and the opposite end of the scsi cable which connects to the emu

Thinking about it now im sure that cable is a special one which goes with the pci card..

So if i found another cable which connected the emu to the cd drive, it would work?
Does the scsi cable power the drive or would i need a power supply?

What you are looking at is the internal 50 Pin SCSI connector on a drive that is meant to be mounted inside tour computer. I doubt you will be able to find an adaptor that allows direct connection of this to a cable. Further to this you will need some method of providing power to the drive as this would usually come from the PC. You will need to hunt around for an external SCSI drive housing to mount it in if you wish to use it with your sampler.

Cheers,

Yes. I got my self an external housing quite cheap from the local listings. There are also a couple floating around on the ebay.

There's plenty of SCSI DVD/CD-ROM drives on UK ebay.

that one on ebay looks pretty reasonable although i would prefer to buy just the housing and use the drive ive got already.

Had a quick look but all i found was enclosures with USB2 not SCSI :???:

So if i bought the one on ebay, exactly which cable would i need to connect it to the EMU?

I've probably got one in my loft that you're welcome to - I'll check over the weekend, and post back here. Was it the one in the above link that you bought? If so, you need centronics 50-pin male to centronics 50-pin male.

that would be cool thanks

well i would have prefered to buy a enclosure to fit that drive i got with the emu, but if not i'll be buying the one in the ebay link above (or one like it)

I really want to get a cd drive setup as i got quite a few discs with the emu

Soon as you've got your drive/enclosure, post or PM me with what type it is - no point in me sending you a cable that doesn't fit.
