HD vanished, please can someone help

Postby catch22 » Fri Jan 14, 2011 3:03 pm

hello,

Ive recently upgraded to an e6400 ultra and wanted to get some presets from my old e4x HD before i sell it.
I plugged an iomega jaz drive which came with my ultra into the scsi port on the e4x and booted her up but when i went into the disk browser only the jaz & floppy was visible and my internal scsi HD had disappeared.

I have tried rebooting without the jaz connected and it STILL doesn't find the HD.

I dont understand what i have done wrong and am very frustrated as the HD was working fine until i used the external scsi bus.

I would appreciate any help,
Thanks

P.S my e4x is on EOS 3.00b

This is a SCSI-ID conflict or a SCSI termination problem.

First check the SCSI-ID of the E4X. Standard-setting is ID #6.
Check the SCSI-ID of your JAZ-drive and change it to something different.

If it's a SCSI-Termination problem then disable SCSI-Termination in EOS and try again. If the problem still persists, re-enable the Termination in EOS again, power off the E4X and open the case. Remove the SCSI-Termination Jumper on your HD and connect everything to check if it's working now before reassembling the unit.

Hi Mosrob & thanks for your reply ,

This is a SCSI-ID conflict or a SCSI termination problem.

Before i connected the Jaz i made sure it was on its own SCSI-ID so i think it must be a termination problem.

First check the SCSI-ID of the E4X. Standard-setting is ID #6.
Check the SCSI-ID of your JAZ-drive and change it to something different.

Yes the E4X ID is at 6, the Jaz is set at 4 but to be honest i dont care about the Jaz connection now just want my HD back

If it's a SCSI-Termination problem then disable SCSI-Termination in EOS and try again. If the problem still persists, re-enable the Termination in EOS again

When you say try again what do you mean? I presume you mean press utils - mount in the disk module. Tried that and still no sign of my Hard Drive.

power off the E4X and open the case. Remove the SCSI-Termination Jumper on your HD and connect everything to check if it's working now before reassembling the unit.

Ok had a look on the net to be clear about what a 'termination jumper' is & then had a look at my HD.
There are 12 pins and on two of them is a plastic plug, i removed the one which corresponded to ' SCSI TERM ON ', powered her up and still no joy. :???:

By the way is the internal SCSI Hard Drive in the same SCSI chain as any devices plugged into the external bus?

Thanks again for your help.

As there is no description of the E4 SCSI-Chain, I assume that the order is something like:
E4 -> internal SCSI-port -> external SCSI-Port

When you remove all Jumpers, the internal HD is set to SCSI-ID#0 and 'termination off'.
You would need an external SCSI-Termination for proper operation.

Is the drive still spinning up and initializing?
What happens if you connect the HD to the internal SCSI-bus of your e6400 Ultra?
Be careful with the power cable of the internal HD. The power connector of the internal HD power supply is different from standard PC-type. 5V and 12V are swapped!

Right ive tried the SCSI HD in my ultra and she cant see it either so i guess its time to get a new HD.
Ive seen one for £10 on ebay so i think al just grab that.

It means ive lost all my old presets and stuff but at this point im not too fussed as long as the hard drive IS the problem and a new one gets recognized.
Thanks for your ideas & i will let you no what happens in the near future.

It's really a pitty that the drive is not recognized anymore.
It looks like the onboard hard drive controller of the harddrive is defective.
If you can find a similar hard drive of the same type, same size and with the same controller onboard including the same firmware, then you might be able to get the HD working again.

By saying "initializing" I mean a specific sound that the drive makes right after spinning up.
It's the sound of recalibration & repositioning the read/write head of the hard drive.
There is some sort of crackling-sound (krrrrk..krk..krk) and you can feel a vibration when putting your hand on the drive.

When looking for a harddrive for your Ultra and you're using EOS 4.7 beta, you should go for a Western Digital:
WD Scorpio Blue 80 GB PATA Hard Drives ( WD800BEVE)
80GB is meanwhile the smallest size. EOS 4.7 can handle HD up to 128GB when formatted with FAT32.

A pitty indeed mate, it had some e-mu cd's on it that i dont have on disk + the presets & samples created by me.
I think ill just stick a new one in it to sell it. Need the money quick to put toward other stuff.
By the way does the scsi HD have to be 5400 rpm like my old one to meet the spin up requirements or could i use a 7200?
also does ive noticed i can find 68 pin ones alot cheaper than 50 pin, do you know of any sort of adapters i might be able to use?

As for the initializing........ Yes still makes the usual krrrrk krr rr kr noises. I hope it is the HD and noting on the sampler itself.

Yes my ultra does already have a HD (smasung spinpoint 40gb) but i am going to upgrade to a larger one & its funny because the WD 1200 beve what im gonna go for actually.

Thanks again for the help Mosrob.
