so i got an adaptec scsi card AVA-2906.

It seems to have installed ok on my PC running XP.

I have a cable to go from the small SCSI to the larger SCSI on the EMU - but when I power it up XP freezes, and un-freezes if I unplug the cable.....

I tried having the EMU powered up then plugging in the SCSI cable but get a fatal error on the EMU.

I picked up a 'spare' E6400 Ultra the other day for cheap & that does the same as my E5000.

Any ideas?

(edit) it does this when I connect a SCSI CD ROM drive aswell.... so could be the scsi card/cable???

Aargh... guess I read this from you in another of your posts already, so warning:

NEVER EVER !!! connect or disconnect SCSI-cables with powered-on sampler(s) and/or PC, i.e. SCSI-cards.
You may destroy the samplers by doing so, hope you did not.

jeez. just gonna get to bouncing out some noises instead of worrying about all this SCSI business for the time being......

I managed to get a 160gig drive in that a customer gave me from her desktop (with an EMU HD kit from ebay) so that is one thing done.

If your also having problems with the cd-rom It's probably not the card, I think it's the cable .
Check your devices are on different SCSI channels.
Try a different cable.
And as mentioned by Rascal Revenge never connect SCSI cables after a power up.
You might get away with this a number of times but it could easily be....

I had simular problems several times before.
Mostly it was an IRQ conflict of the SCSI-PCI-controller card with other internal computer parts.
The PC ran stable for hours, but when I tried to access the SCSI-chain it locked up directly, sometimes with a bluescreen, sometimes it just froze with no reaction at all.

Try to plug the SCSI-card into another PCI-Slot on the mainboard, or to deactivate other computer components, that are not needed/ not used via the PC-BIOS.
You have to know what you are doing then should be added, never switch off anything that is unknown, it might have fatal results.

You can check the IRQ-usage of your PC at bootup, often your bios shows a message there which components are listed and the IRQ-channels they do use.
There are also several PC-tools that show the IRQ-setup like sysoft sandra or everest home, these are older programs, I do not know the new tools here.
There is also a function in windows to view your configuration
Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Information - Hardware Resources - IRQ

I did mostly have real problems and freezes, when the SCSI-card used the same IRQ as the graphic-card, or if it used the same IRQ then the IDE or S-ATA controller.
Also sharing IRQ with USB port is problematic most times.
Some BIOS have the option to change which IRQ-channel is given to which PCI-slot / IRQ asssignment. You have to look into the manual for detailed information here.
The PCI-slot directly next to the graphic card often shares the IRQ with the graphic adapter, no matter if is AGP or PCI-express.
So my tip is not to use this !

Freezes can also appear if the SCSI-bus is not terminated correctly, sometimes you have to use an active terminator plug at the end of the last SCSI-port.
