So the PowDec Technologies PTH65301 doesn't have a -12volt DC rail.
Are you saying that this PSU is not compatible with the E-mu?
Sorry if this is a dumb question but my knowledge of electronics extends about as far as switching on the kettle.

No problems with the Sunpower one I Hope?
Mine has arrived along with the recommended fans, so I will be doing this mod at the weekend.

in my view....no ! look at the PTH65301pdf....I can´t find a -12V rail ?! AND it´s weaker !

i have NO practical experience with the PowDec Technologies PTH65301 Series !
well, MY electronics engineer highly commended the sunpower as replacement PS for my emu´s.

history....my old e4XT: start up problems, lamps flicker, freeze.....we checked the PS, one rail was dead....we searched for a spare PS with more power, find the sunpower !
i fixed the wiring harness. first test with the new PS implemented - NEVER test A PS without a load ... told me MY electronics engineer ! all rails good !
but my 1. e4xt was dark and dead :-( a spare parts storage.

so i implemented the new sunpower PS in my 2. e4xt ! heartbeat at 150 BPM ...you know ! :-) but blessedly complete success ! i purchased another e4xt, a e6400 ultra and a older
e4X for my son....all 4 samplers are modified and in daily use ! no problems ! :-) the job ist not so difficult to do....I did´it...and i´m not the electronics hero !


that´s MY wealth of experience !

Hi Solitaire, The PSU info I posted was from E-MU Systems. Give me a week to confirm some details. In the meantime I attach the E4 Ultra Main Board Power supply schematic, you can see pin 6 in the schematic is -12V and the Power Supply specs in the technical documents.

If the outputs are floating, I think it is ok to invert +12V and the corresponding 0V outputs to give 0V and -12V, no ?

thanx for the E4 ULTRA SCHEMATICS !

o.k ! V3 is -12V and the PS is certainly a 1:1 replacement for the original emu PS. good to know !


the Sunpower-SPS-060P-T2 advantage FOR ME !

more power, between 0.5 and 1 A !!
you can drop the original shielding plate.....a noise tunnel for the rear-fan !
the closed sunpower box design allowed the PS-fan mounting, the PS does not overheat without the ad. fan !! but it works cooler - extends the average span of life !
the 11db fan helps the rear-fan.....conclusion.....a better cooling design and considerably less noise !

disadvantage

the alu-L-bracket issue ! ....no rocket science. :-)

i think the emus have 2 crucial points !

1. the PS and capacitor pain - custom solution - thread
2. the little inverter board - location - motherboard, behind the display ! i don't really fancy doing that....we will see ! :-)

by the way......

my last optimization for my emu-family is a Zalman FanMate II - look jpeg - for the rear fan ! my fan rotates now at about 70-80 % functionally adequate !

i´m a noise fetichist !! ;-)

I've been so busy in the last week or two, but tonight I finally fitted the new power supply and it works perfectly.

I found that the easiest way to mount the PSU was to drill two holes into the bottom casing of the sampler. The replacement PSU has a screw hole on each side of unit, so i drilled the holes at the appropriate distance and mounted the unit with 2 nuts and bolts ( see picture)

My fixing/wiring maybe not as elegant as quested208 but it's solid.

TIP
I noticed the original power supplies (now redundant) aluminium shielding cover could easily be cut down to form a mounting plate if anyone would prefer mounting quested208 way. it even has the 90 degree bend.
