emusonacid! legacy

So I brought an Emu E5000 Ultra off Ebay, it all worked fine, then I brought an IDE Drive for it off ebay too

I installed it with the power connection wrong, which broke the hard drive, luckliy the guy took pity on me an replaced my drive.

I then installed it correctly & it all worked fine for about 2 weeks, then one day I turn it on and the LCD is all dark and its not booting, the lights are all on but nothing is happening, now when I turn it on the LCD flickers like Tetris style bricks. very upsetting.

so then I decide to buy an E6400 Ultra, as I wanted more outputs on the back. I have just recived the E6400 Ultra & it works fine. I just installed the IDE drive, and it boots up fine, but Ive noticed now the LCD is very dim in comparison to what it used to be & its scared me!! I really dont want another to fail on me

Ive taken the IDE drive out and the screen is now back to normal

I was wondering if anyone knew what was happening and what I can do to change it?

I'd really like to use the IDE drive as im a bit scared of Zip Drives and how reliable they are

Im assuming its something to do with the power supply? maybe the IDE it supping too much power?

You did not mention the make and model of the IDE drive.
The best solution for an internal HD are 2.5" notebook harddrives like the WD Blue series, e.g. WD Blue 80 GB PATA (Model: WD800BEVE) or the 120GB PATA (Model: WD1200BEVE). You have to use EOS 4.70 and format the HD with FAT32 fileformat.

The actually recommended storage solution is a SCSI Compact Flash Card Reader like the PCD-50B that are some members of this forum are using.
No moveable parts, hotplug capablity for exchanging files with a PC (if formatted with FAT32 fileformat).

The IDE drive Im using was brought off Ebay as an Emu sampler hard drive loaded with all the old Emu sounds so if it is wrong its super annoying!

JAHFUNK told me that by looking at my serial number, it seems I have an older model with a lower power PSU

what do you think I should do?

I just want the safest option, I cant afford another emu to die on me!!!!!!!

I just want safe storage im not looking for my EMU to talk to my Mac

its all confusing the hell out of me so if you could speak to me in idiot terms it would be greatly appreciated!!!

some people are saying to use a compact flash drive / card with IDE adaptor, has anyone had any experience of this working?

it looks pretty simple, just get an CF card & an IDE adaptor

this seems like it could be a good solution as it draws a lot less power, does anyone have any experience with this working?

I just really want to get this sorted out!

Some guy on the other forum is suggesting I get a CF card, then a CF to IDE converter, which I can then power from the IDE power thing inside the EMU and it plugs into the IDE drive slot instead of a Hard drive but uses 5 / 10% of the power of an IDE

he said he has never tried it with an EMU but it works fine with his MPC

do you think this would work?

looks like a pretty cheap option as CF cards are like 20 quid and the converter is like 3 quid, then I already have the power cable and ribbon from the IDE drive

Ive been googling and I see people using CF card readers into the SCSI port, but nothing about into the IDE drive

looks like a pretty ideal solution if it will work, I only need 20 odd gig of storage really & if i fill that up I can always open it up and put a new card in

I dont want my bird to die but equally im under a few deadlines and I need to get to work, maybe I could look into sourcing a new PSU for the long run, where do you think i could get one from?
